For those of us with Hagerty insurance...

....the following experience of a friend of mine should give us pause for thought. Yesterday morning 6 of us were on a nice cruise in the NC countryside in our 911's. All was well until the cdi unit on my friend's car failed. Time to use the Hagerty insurance for a tow. About 25 miles from home. Hagerty middleman assigns tow company. They call and say all the tow is not free only 5 miles. Friend says ok, reluctantly. Hour passes and middleman calls and says original towing company won't come, too busy. Assigns new company which call friend and tells him it's $180 just to show up and an hour wait on top of that. Friend says no and calls a local tow company that shows up in 20 minutes and tows him home for $100 cash. Friend now has 2 charges on his credit card.
Pretty shabby treatment. $100 a year will buy you 100 mile free towing with AAA.
I may look for a new insurance carrier when I'm due to renew. Shabby.

I carry AAA too. I didn't go with hagerty for roadside service, just for insurance.

And you may not have good luck with AAA either in a remote area. Those guys all have negotiated rates with the tow companies, which usually buys a slow response.

AAA is well worth the membership for towing and use instead of going to the dmv, I don't use them for insurance

Yeah, well I had an incident with my 82 SC when I owned it. A construction sign fell on the car on a windy day. Did Almost $5K worth of damage. Hagerty handled the situation very well. I would absolutely use them again.

I call AAA for a tow.

Yep. My experience was that the insurance side worked well but for roadside, you need the expanded AAA service.

Had AAA for years and ready to bail.....73.5 had a MSD coil burn up 2 weeks ago 10 miles fromm home.....

Typical deal: Call AAA...Response: We agree to be there in an hour, but this could be 2 hrs.....Trooper came by: said he just waited 2 hrs for AAA and canceled.......Called Ms LCE to come down in PU with tow strap....Almost home with "Questionable help" when I get a call from AAA......Sorry it will be another hour (now a Thunder storm)........I'm out of here....

When my son had an 02 JettaTDI we used the living hell out of the towing AAA offers.
They finally sent me a letter stating either get a good mechanic for the car or they would drop me from the towing plan. We got rid of the car.

I have used all of my 'long tows' with AAA Plus two years in a row now. And 3 years ago, had an accident in the middle of nowhere and got an AAA tow of 99 miles to the nearest shop (AAA Plus tows up to 100 miles for free).

Hagerty is my insurance co for my older Porsches and I haven't tried to used them for towing, but with my one collision claim experience with them, I'm a customer for life.

I've used AAA numerous times. Never waited more than 45 minutes. Great service. One tow or discount at my wrench pays for the year.

I use Haggerty for regular insurance coverage......but not their roadside assistance.

I had Allstate Roadside assistance for years until I realized they kept jacking up my rates while maintaining lower rates for new customers. Now that is shabby. But when I needed assistance the program worked well.

I'm going to get signed up again but this time with AAA. I'm a believer in this type of insurance.

Hagerty has been a decent company for me, as insurance companies go...
They cover basic to-and-from-events only for classic cars at an exceptional rate.
No daily rush hour driving. No track. No b.s. customers.
I think that is quite fair, as stated.

This sounds more like a "scumbag tow truck company" situation, combined with poor feedback from a customer service rep.

OK I just joined AAA.

Chose the "Classic" plan for $66.00/yr.

Even though I carry everything needed to change a flat tire plus tubeless tire repair kit and cig. lighter inflator device there may be some days I just don't want to do it....then there is the situations which may require a tow. For $66.00/yr. it's worth the backup!

When I was teaching my niece to drive, I said there are two essential things - your mobile phone and a AA membership.

That's important, but a AAA membership is good to have as well.

I have had AAA for more than 20 years. A few years back, I had the 911 flatbeded home more than 80 miles. I road home with the driver. Tow driver backed up to my garage, extended the bed all the way out, and literally set the 911 down inside the garage, just cause I asked if he could do it. No charge.

Good service, but their 12 Step Towing Program is a *****.

After 10 years with Hagerty and having 4 cars insured with them, I recently cancelled my policy after an unpleasant experience with my 930. I am now insured with Grundy and saved $1100 with the identical coverage and terms.

Hagerty's customer service has declined over the years. McKeel is too busy counting cash and going to auctions.
