Need some advice.

I have this wine nook in the house. Has a bar, wine rack and wine fridge.

I've always wanted to add a nice iron gate to it.

These popped up on my local FB trading board. $150 each and I only need one.

Apparently came off an old ship.

28x72 I assume without the hinge so figure another 1.5 inches. Waiting for seller answer on that

My door opening is 34.5 wide. Height is not an issue, don't need the gate floor to top since the doorway is arched anyway.

So I'd have 5-6 inches to make up.

Figure 3 gets eaten up on the hinge side.

What do I do on the other side? Get an old piece of angle iron so the gate has something to close against and visually occupies the gap.

Ideas wanted.

Those can easily be cut down to to accommodate the opening.

Hinges are weld on and can be changed as well.

Steel is the most flexible medium.

A well recommended fabricator can do that no sweat on site in the drive way in a few hours.

It's a very simple pattern on the gate so i would just go with angle iron as a "stop" bolted to the opposite wall with flatiron on the other for hinge weld mounting. I'd go 1 to 2" up off the floor for mounting or maybe see how it looks splitting the difference and mount "Saloon Door" style between floor and arch. Simple gate, simple arch, keep it simple. If you do mount close to the floor you can always hang a sign or decorative piece from the arch to fill the visual gap.

Had not thought about that but really want only one gate, not two.

Have always had it in my head it should have a dry old metallic creaking sound when it swung.

Opening of 34 means 16 per side. They are currently 28 wide so the 16 would not fall on a "natural" cut.

Thats what I'm thinking.

And another thing. Being antique and one of a kind, even though you need only one, buy both. You can always use both together later or use the other to accent another part of the house.

Wine bottles and steel are quite sexy. Past project.

That's that.

Too bad, it would have been a cool look. Even though it's a moot point, I'd have bought both and then taken one section off one of the pieces and welded it onto the other to make it wider with the same pattern. You then would have had a nearly perfect width once hinges and a latch were installed.

Oh well. I'll show you my mock up anyway. I thought the mounting point on the non-hinged side could be an antique looking 22" door pull.

I like it and in hindsight should not have shown the wife.

She'll be in FL for a couple of weeks.

Should have just bought them and done the install so when she got back it was done.
