PC Gaming?
I know nothing about it.
That being said, I am surprising my son with a gaming PC for his birthday (16th...he's already got a big old tank for a car that he loves). I had the computer built by a local guy, and it has three monitors for surround video (I'm using terms that I've just learned, so if I sound stupid, it's because I am:)), b/c I'm hoping he'll be interested in flight sim...but I thought it'd be kinda cool for other games as well. I've tried to do my own research regarding good games, but trying to have a conversation with the local talent at Gamestop has not proven too successful...much less gaming forums where they use some language developed on another planet. Anyhoo....any gamers in the PP brain trust? He likes the usual games..."Tour of Duty" etc., and hasn't really tried anything else (he just uses an XBox now). He doesn't play often (just some on the weekends), but I'd like to get a game or two that would take advantage of the new computer.... Suggestions? SmileWavy |
As a Linux user, I don't get a lot of the top-tier games. That said, I'd look at
Xonotic - both Free and free, multiplatform FPS shooter FlightGear - both Free and free flight sim w/ multiplayer capabilitiy including the possibility of a player acting as a ATC guy I'd also consider getting a pre-loaded credit card and letting him set up a Steam account - all sorts of top tier games, downloadable, etc. |

Nice thing is you can monitor his account to see how much he has been playing. |
I'm not familiar with most of the newer games but I liked...
Driving: Need For Speed Porsche Unlimited-Old. Crap physics except for a few. Grand Prix Legends- Old. All tracks in the world free. Steep learning curve. GT Legends- Pcar and 80s GTR2- needs faster reflexes. Yours free. Flight: IL2 1946- Older but very good with upgrades IL2/CLiffs of Dover- Requires Steam activation crap. Yours free. MS Flight SimX- The last. Aftermarket downloads community. FPS: Operation Flashpoint- Old but extensive environments and 'realistic' ARMA2+- Same mftr. Great graphics, but quirky controls and bugs etc. Rainbow Six series- Older. Small environments but fun Ghost Recon series- Older. |
All I have to say is IDDQD, IDKFA, IDCLIP, Quicken, NRA, RAMBO, and kitty :)

I am a little biased, but this is a fun game and a nice twist on the shooter genre that was recently released for PC.

Lots of excellent games (some free, even) available through Steam. Quote:

My son spends as much time on Steam (on the Mac) as on X-Box.

I use www.gamersgate.com some of the games you buy from there will just be codes to redeem a steam version but they have a rewards system i like to use. if your son gets a gg account i can hook him up with a free copy of crusader kings 2. i have an extra one. it has a very steep learning curve but it's extremely fun/addicting.
