Hating Apple/Mac right now.

The latest upgrades have ruined my newish iPad2, and my new iPhone 5.
I know, I should have done my homework before upgrading. I assumed that "upgrade" meant improve. My mistake.
What would you recommend as replacements?
The phone is Applecare covered. Will Apple give me a 6, since their upgrade ruined my 5?
This is the fourth device, in recent memory, that has been destroyed by an "upgrade"' via Apple. Fifth actually, if you count the wireless router. Maybe 3000 bucks worth, minimum.
WTF?

Maybe the 'geniuses' at the Apple store will downgrade the OS version for you?

My 2010 MBP had GPU errors that needed a new logic board. While there they wanted to update the OS to latest ... no thanks Mr. Genius ;)

I downloaded iOS 8.1 on my iPad last week.
Results are decreased speed, endless reboots and can no longer download pics to Pelican.
I utilize Safari through Tapatalk, never had a problem prior to Apple's "upgrade."

Thanks Apple!

Have you spoken to Apple to see if they have any solutions for you? I would talk to them before giving up completely.

I did send them some consumer feedback. How long before they get back to me?
Oh, never? Thanks, Apple.
I will be visiting the Apple Store, when I get near one. 400 km drive.
The last time I visited, they tried to pawn off my Applecare warranty responsibility to my carrier. Not impressed.

I have never used another platform.
Do the other systems have the "upgrade to a brick" option?

widgeon13 11-04-2014 08:58 AM

Try doing a "chat", what harm can it do?

enzo1 11-04-2014 11:27 AM

power it down...

Have you tried closing all windows, turning it off, then turning it on again?

That works for my car, anyway.

Gogar 11-04-2014 01:41 PM

I think "ruined" and "destroyed" probably aren't the right words.

There are actually two common factors involved in the problems creaturecat has shared here. Only one of them is Apple. :D

My iPad is fuuuu....up.
It crashes all the time now. Videos won't play
No way am I going to update my phone.

Cajundaddy 11-04-2014 02:09 PM

Well I find it far easier to "brick" a PC or Windows Mobile device so I offer little hope. Tech is as tech does and those of us "IT challenged" types are doomed like the dodo.

Try an internet search of "undo ios8" and see what you get. Maybe this? http://support.apple.com/en-us/ht1430

Yup. Perhaps overstated.

Lately I confess being annoyed at how often you have to upgrade everything... If you own a few of those devices (Mac, Ipads, Iphones) which is easy to do in a family setting, you could spend a full day out of the week upgrading the damn things in sequence... Mac OS, IOS, perpetual app updates, slow backups, sync, etc... It's almost impossible not to see 15 apps needing upgrading every other day... And my pet peeve is the "other" category taking 1/3 of your iphone space for no reason, requiring a full restore to get rid of... Ugh...

But.... the alternative is... ? I tried the dark side, it was clunky. And they charge for new OS on the PC. One thing you gotta give Apple is that they have excellent customer service, if you can take the time. I walked in the other day with a suspected iphone battery issue. They noticed my button was sticky as well, and....just handed me a new Iphone. Like that. No hassle, and frankly I thought it was overkill, but...

It's not all good, but it's not all bad ;-) Rule of thumb: NEVER EVER upgrade to the initial version of a new OS. EVER.... wait for the x.1 upgrade !!!

You should switch to Windows Mobile portable devices and to Windows PCs. Windows is completely trouble free. Everything just works. No crashes ever. Always has been that way. Quick, before Apple ruins the rest of your life!

FIFY!

Point being that it's -rarely- a problem with the device, or the OS.

I suggest that you take your IOS devices and 'wipe' them, install fresh OS, and then re-install the apps and the stuff that you ACTUALLY USE. Transfer the pics or the movies or songs, etc. that you actually will use, and only those.

with IOS 8 lots of these app developers are trying to cover IOS 6,7,8 with their apps.

How many apps on your phone? 20? 50? 100?

How many do you really use? 15? 20?

Also make sure you know how to 'force quit' apps on your phone/iPad. In a day if you use 15 apps they will all be running in the background on your phone and can grind it to a halt even though everything seems fine on the surface.

Just my $.02. No preference here for Mac or PC, I just know Mac better and that's why I stick with it.

creaturecat 11-05-2014 06:03 AM

21 apps on my phone.
Using 25% of my capacity.
I do close apps running in the background.
Hopefully there will be an upgrade in the near future.
The phone portion works fine. : )

Thanks Gogar, et al.
