I've gotten some nice responses, mostly enthusiasts though. I got one "Hey Mr., is that the car that goes two hundred miles an hour?" to which I casually replied "Nah, just 150."
I got more on the bike. I had a Ducati Monster, and the girls loved it, the guys stared, and the family guys in the minivans just got this hopeful yet sedated look in their eyes. Dogs may love trucks, but girls love bikes.

Seventeen year old son and his budies are all into the ricer thing but when it came time to get a cool picture taken for a photo contest at the high school two of them stood in front of my '77 targa, and they won. The best part is the car was up on a jack. Those who know anything about cars or appreciate cars know a classic.

Seriously, G, you are not alone. We shall get together with the lads in NYC shortly for some serious beer and some frivolous talk about 911's, and you will realize that we all share the same triumphs and frustrations. JFC

I get a lot of looks from all types but the thing that busted me up the most was the guy that asked me what it felt like to drive a car that costs as much as a house! I said "I don't know, I've never seen a house for less than $10,000" his jaw just dropped!
I noticed my wife started calling it "our porsche" to her friends even though she has yet to drive it.

Last night I was at the Glenferrie Rd and Riversdale Rd intersection (turning left into Riversdale), and a bevy of homies, standing outside the Dairy Bell, were egging me on to go spastic when the lights turned green. My amused girlfriend was pretty sure I wasn't going to give these boys what they wanted. When the light went green, I launched the car at 5,000rpm, and got massive -- but controllable -- oversteer as I turned into Riversdale before changing into second at 7,500rpm. My girlfriend: You just had to do it, didn't you? Me: When I was young, I used to stand on street corners and beg 911 drivers to give me what I wanted. They never did, and I swore I'd never be an uptight prick if I had a 911. Another reason for the demonstration was that I was surprised that a 911 could make gen Y'ers go mental. Maybe they were too white bread. I was picking up a friends kids from school one day and a couple 8 year old boys ran up and yelled, wow, is that a boxster? he he. i said nope, its even better, a 911... a what? they replyed ( i figured a little education was called for.) a Porsche 9-11, better than a boxster guys, and FASTER! WOW! they thought it was cool, and repeated 911 as they went off to tell their friends. awe, what a cool feeling, a little brainwashing, a lot of truth.
now i'm in trouble.

The stares from girls and kids are great. However, in my experience, the most rewarding is the slack-jawed double take of the salesman/corporate suck-up in his Dodge Intrepid. You know, he is sitting there at a stop light in business attire, on the cell phone, thinking he is the most important one on the block. Then you pull up along side in the 911 in jeans and a T-shirt and give the guy a quick grin/smirk. Then for the rest of his drive home, you know he is contemplating what he has been doing wrong this whole time!

Not really worth mentioning but anyway....I live near the border to China. Mainland Chinese people come to Hong Kong to see the 'big city' once in a life time. The tour buses use the freeway near our home to enter into HK from China.
Today I was cruising along when a mainland tourist bus with old men and women 60's+ (sorry if I offended any of you old timers) pulled-up in a lane next to me. I looked over to see these old geezers all staring and pointing at me. I glance towards the front of the bus and there's the tour guide on the microphone pointing at me and my car and talking on the mic! God knows what he was saying (probably something about HK's affluent society) but they were all smiles and waves. I waved back, threw back two gears and took off. I'd love to know what they were thinking (then again maybe not!). I know I get more looks in my cab. than when I've been with my mate in his coupe. My son (6yrs) and daughter (10yrs) have friends lining up for a ride and the dad's always looked jealous but rarely say anything. I reckon they're thinking teachers get over paid....yeah right....nothing to do with the fact that my wife earns truck loads more than me! Invariabley the dads all own stately, refined, comfortable Mercedes, BMW's etc, but like some of you have indicated, you know they are thinking about a fun car, thats sexy, cool and fast. Cheers Mark

I get a kick out of people who jump out of a $50,000 Land
Cruiser at the gas station and are amazed at the "rich guy's" $12,000 SC. |

Hey Matt, good on you for showing those w*gs what a 911 can do. I used to think the same as them in my hot rod HQ we all swore could run a 12 sec 1/4 and drag off anything 100 times the price given the chance. I too have dumped the clutch and fried those puny 225's on the 3.2 in front of the local 7/11 to much applause of the local "no-where-else-to-be-red-baseball-cap-started-shaving-when-I-was-8" brigade.
Alas, now I have "R" rubber. Oh well. You mentioned a track day was coming up - where? Is this a drivers ed thing? Can I come?

BTW, why is this in off topic rantings? Seems a tad inconsistant in view of all the "I am a hero 'cos I dragged off a BMW despite not having the cohonyas to put my car on the track" posts.

I think thats pretty unfair. Not all of us want to risk our cars on the track, where there are concrete walls. I KNOW my car is fast, I dont need to take it on a track to prove it. But if I did, the Porsche is SO good that I know id get around in a very good time. And besides, it our duty to cook BMW owners on the road where every one can see. Ditto ricers and mustangs. Turn up the Barry White, I see a bus load of school girls..... stuart |

I almost always rev up for small children. It's true that the faces light up. It's kind of a cool feeling.

Jeez, no way here in San Diego. No looks at all. There's just too many expensive cars around here and most of them are way newer than my 86 "klunker". Hopefully folks have backed off the negative stereotyping with my "classic" Porsche and instead levy their less than complimentry remarks on the water pumpers.
BTW: I have yet to have a newer Porsche owner wave or even look my way when we cross paths. These guys only recognize big bags of cash and fully know their wheel/tire packages are worth more than my car. |

When i had my 914 it was great. EVERY 914 I saw on the road would always wave, or even want to race a bit.

These stories seem weird to me... even with my "lowly" 944, I've gotten nothing but positive attention.
I was visiting a friend at Fairfied U last spring and heard a couple of kids (getting out of a "riced" Eclipse, nonetheless) have this conversation: "That car is f***ing sweet." "Yeah it's nice. Not really that fast, though..." "Who cares? I heard they handle great, and besides, it's a Porsche." There was one night last summer that I had the car out for 2 hours tops, and got offers to buy it by two excited 20-25 year olds. My friend, whose father has a 1969 Corvette 427 with 9000 miles on it, told me that after seeing my car his father said he could see himself driving it as a daily driver. One time I was driving by a gas station, and a group of, um, 'urban' teenagers started pointing. I was like, "oh great, what now..." but then one yelled, "hey is that a 944?" I nodded yes and he asked me to rev the engine. I complied. I got smiles, thumbs up, and nods of approval. There was one time that I even got a "thumbs up" from a middle-aged Corvette C4 driver going past in the other direction. (this one really put a smile on my face) The only people that really seem to have contempt for me and my car are "ricers," particularly wealthy suburban white boys that despise anything that isn't Japanese and covered with stickers. I stare at every Porsche that goes by, whether it is a new Turbo or a beat-up 924. And I wave to every one if I am in my car... ... it may not be a 911, but it gets a lot of positive attention. And I love the attention, but I wouldn't really mind if it didn't get any.
