AirBag defects/recall. Could be as far back as 2002.
Airbag Maker Knew of Shrapnel Issue in 2004, Destroyed Data
Looks like it's on your dime if you bought the car used. |
Not really.... BMW replaced the airbags on my used 3 series. They track vin numbers as well as owners. A friend with a salvage title, second hand 3 series also had his replaced.
Not sure how other makes are being handled, but BMW seems to have stepped up. |
and people always look at me like i am crazy when i tell them that i disabled the airbags.

Only airbags I've disabled/removed were in a dedicated track car with harnesses. |

Has anyone gotten the airbag replaced yet? I have an 03 Honda that is on the list.....
Takata Economic Loss - Grant & Eisenhofer I sent them an email. |

I've never heard of anyone doing this in my life. There must be constant, bright warning lights on at all times. Or did you engineer some electrical tape over them? |
I wish there was a way to disable the passenger-side airbag in my car while I'm waiting for my local BMW shop to get the parts for the recall in. If I carry a passenger, the airbag is more likely to hurt them than to help them right now.

I have never personally spoken to a person who was not injured at all by an airbag that fired. I know the response to this is, yeah, but they would have really gotten injured if there was no airbag. No, that is not the case. All wore seatbelts and almost invariably the worst injury was the airbag burn. Just because they have put them in all the cars sold in the US since 1995, or whenever it became mandatory, does not make it a good idea. The passenger side airbag in my Miata is usually off, because it is usually a kid riding there. |
Check your manuals, most manufacturers recommend/require airbag replacement every 8 years. How many of you adhere to that requirement?
While they can be great safety devices, I also know someone that was in a minor accident and injured by airbags in an older vehicle. So I'm more than a little wary of explosive devices that are past their replacement dates. |
It is simply amazing that the engineers (or accountants) didn't take corrosion of the canister into consideration when building them.
I'm still a big fan of airbags and I'm likely alive today because of them. During my wreck 2 years ago, almost every airbag in my 997 went off including the head curtain bag that likely saved my life. I had zero injuries or marks from the airbags. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417359911.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417359925.jpg |
