Delta Blues
About ten years ago my son turned me on to RL Burnside. Since then I have fallen in love with the old time Mississippi Delta Blues. Artists like, Robert Johnson, Furry Lewis, Pink Anderson, T Model Ford and Leadbelly are American treasures.
Anyone else into the old timey blues? Educate me. |
I thought this was another thread knocking an airline?

Huge blues fan. Love National guitars.
If you don't have it already, get John Hammond "live" album. A white boy who can play the hell out of a guitar. He grew up in music and knew many of the original players. Saw him on austin city limits in the 1990's- my jaw dropped. Anyway. I'm busy at work and this might not be the best video but it's the first I saw so here's a link: A one man band/catharsis.- oh yeah turn up earsplittingly loud. john hammond - drop down mama+come on in my kitchen - 6/14/91 - YouTube bukka white also great player- murderer, and got to play music in jail. love 12 string blues, another player paul geremia (another white guy who rebuilds stella 12 strings) listen to "skin game blues" at this link. good stuff. http://www.allmusic.com/album/gamblin-woman-blues-mw0000095282 |

Lightning Hopkins Elmore James Willie Dixon Those three will keep you smiling fo ever. A dozen others but don't get in no rush. Wait 'til you hear Lightning Hopkin's "Grandpa told Grandma." |
I'm a big fan of Lightnin' Hopkins, Bukka White and Mississippi Fred MacDowell. I've always loved Delta Blues, but don't leave out Piedmont Blues and Reverend Gary Davis and others.
Here's Lightnin' doing "Mojo Hand".... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/keQR4_7DBnM?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I was right there along side you with RL but when you swung west on Hwy 6 and headed to the delta you lost me. I like Delta Blues but I love me some Hill Country Blues. Proud to say I made it to Junior Kimbrough's Juke Joint before it burned but sadly not before Junior passed away. Saw RL numerous times. Most of these guys are gone but you can still catch their kids performing. Otha Turner's Rising Star Fife and Drum band lives on. Cedric Burnside Project, Duane Burnside Band, Kenny Brown Band, David Kimbrough Band. You need to make a road trip! -J
One article on Junior's place - ISSUE 54: Junior's Place :: Oxford American - The Southern Magazine of Good Writing Check out You See Me Laughin for a look at the Hill Country Bluesmen. Put together by Matthew Johnson of Fat Possum Records. Matthew was able to record a lot of these guys before they passed. Did you guys see the documentary on RL "you see me laughing"?, it is enlightening. Kenny Brown is a hell of a guitarist.

I tend to be a purist & it is easy to drift into Texas or Chicago Blues territory. Delta blues is distinctively very simple blues where Texas is more melodical in a way. Listen to Robert Johnson.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Yd60nI4sa9A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Or early Muddy. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/mRBoo-ciwAs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Then listen to Blind Willie Johnson. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Y_o4omd8T5c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Anyway, all blues is good blues. I know nothing about the blues.....carry on boys...yer heading him down the right path.
|
Not technically delta, but give Big Bill Broonzy a listen.
I'd also recommend early Chicago blues... Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Sonny Boy The blues is just intoxicating. Luckily as a 18 year old kid(30 years ago) I saw Buddy Guy. Having an attraction to the blues then, he cemented a life long love affair with the blues. |

there is an out of print set of the Chess recordings on CD that is great. There have to be some still out there. Lots of obscure stuff.
