McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 - who's faster?

Well, this video has an answer of sorts.

Pretty cool video. Color me green with envy.

Cool video.

I really home someone gets the Ferrari, McLaren & Porsche 918 together on the same track with the same tires with the same driver for a real honest comparison.

I suspect all three manufacturers don't want that.

An being a little prejudiced I hope they use a Weissach version of the 918 for the test.

I agree, but with the tires the manufacturers sell the cars with.

^^^

Or, go ahead and let the manufacturer spec it to a specific track with input from the tire manufacturer. I suspect that McLaren did exactly that after reading the data from the first day.

Who knows what sort of changes were made to the chassis and the electronics for the second attempt to gain a second and a half on a small, tight track.

All the hypercars are developed with plenty of input from tire manufacturers, who are designing the tires specifically for that car.

Unleash the dogs of war!

(I secretly like the fact that the Ferrari came in a distant third, even with all the track time and setup!)

That Ferrari was not the Ferrari LaFerrari. It was "just and ordinary" street Ferrari.

Oh. I missed that. I was still getting my head around the seven sets of tires that were provided...

Doesn't the 918 have the record at the ring for a factory car?

One aspect of Porsche I have always valued is the numbers they provide, which is usually conservative on 0-60, 0-100, etc.

Most other mfg's take the best numbers from a certain magazines(in small print in the ad), where they were running a few gallons of gas, ducts taped off, AC disconnected, etc to get the best numbers. EVERYONE makes a great car now(on paper), but what's it like to live with in the real world?

Legacy: McLaren makes a fine F1 car, but they have no real history in sports car racing. When they have a few Le Mans wins under their belt in P1 category...

'95 wasn't a great year for prototypes

I just hope this hybrid supercar technology trickles down to the 911 and Cayman.

It seems like the 911 wouldn't be too hard since they already have the front drive setup.

Even if they just added a front axle motor to go with the rear engine it would make for great awd performance and a few miles of electric only front wheel driving.

That's right!...it didn't really register with me, since it was powered by a BMW Engine!

In 1995 McLaren also came 3rd, 4th and 5th, to add to the 2nd time in history a new manufacturer has won the 24 hrs on the first attempt

In 1996 McLaren privateers finished 4th, 5th and 6th behind the 2nd and 3rd place factory Porsche cars

In 1997 McLaren privateers finished 2nd and 3rd overall and 1st and 2nd in GT1 against the might of Porsche and Toyota factory teams that built homologation special race cars to gain an unfair advantage

Finally in 1998 with a year old car a privateer team finished 4th behind the 1st and 2nd place Porsche factroy teams and the 3rd placed Toyota factory team

Not bad results for Le Mans 24 hrs attempts for a small English super car company.

"an unfair advantage"

The 'unfair advantage' is superior intelligence.

That why we made it to the Moon before Russia...we had the smartest guys in the world working for us. The jets, the rockets, the stealth technology for aircraft were already light years ahead in terms of stuff that actually worked, and gave us the 'unfair advantage'.

Of course, many believe our space program is some manufactured aberration
