ancestrydna.com ???
Just saw an ad for ancestry.com partner ancestrydna.com...got me thinking. A quick search has lots of people talking bad about ancestryBYdna.com, which, is not related to ancestry.com. So has anyone tried it? For $100 I think it would be a cool thing to find out!

Well I have a different take on this. Be careful what you wish for. An ancestry search could end up with some undesirable consequences that you had not thought of. So here goes. Here is an example. Say you did a research and found that your grandfather had an illegitimate child. You then contacted the illegitimate child and perhaps that child was not as wealthy as you. The child feeling hard done then pursues you.
I know statute of limitations can come into it, appeals to the will etc. Don't ask me how I know. Sometimes you don't want to know. If you knew you might drop it like a hot potato....... Guy. |
My brother has been doing a lot of genealogy research on our family. He tried one of those services on our mother's side (via her brother, who is still living) and the results supported the few historical records he could find.
Off the subject a bit, he was able to trace our paternal family back to the little town in Alsace that we came from and the ship our ancestor's came over on in 1739. I went back there last year. Half the town has the same last name as me!! |
And the guv'mint will get a copy...
I don't have to worry about that though, they already have mine through USCIS... |

From the commercial, it looked like it would just tell you where your ancestors came from by percentage makeup. I don't remember seeing anything about finding out who you are related to. Maybe that is the other company.
They used dna analysis on the last few episodes of "Finding Your Roots" on PBS. Told the stars where their ancestors came from in the world. I think it is kind of neat. Like a gateway for getting into genealogy. |

I have been curious about this also and don't know where to start...
Our surname goes back to England... google says there is a shipyard and there was a kit car with our name on them... ironically there is also a non-alcoholic beer with our name on it (not made in England). A couple relatives started searches and I'm trying to pick up those pieces... I never much cared about my ancestry... but recently my dad passed at 90 and my mom is looking weak... been going through a lot of old documents and that got me thinking. |
My brother did it without using ancestry.com for a while, but it or a service like it helps a lot. You can find draft cards, census listings, birth/death/marriage certificates, ship's manifests, etc and pick your way through the past. Those old documents should have some information on them that can get you started.

Gotcha.
I had wonderful success on ancestry.com. it dispelled some myths and confirmed others. Something I will treasure is a recording I made of my grandma before she passed of her telling a lot of the stories she used to tell over and over again. A lot of what she had to say about growing up where and when she did would otherwise be gone forever, but now it lives on. scottmandue, I recommend you do the same if possible. |

Just a story. |
Ive played around on ancestry. Its pretty neat.
My aunt is big into genealogy. She managed to trace our family back to the 1570s in the Netherlands. Found quite a few secrets people had been keeping quiet. |

I can trace my maternal Grandfather's line back to 1507 in Beilstein (Baden-Württemberg), Germany.
