914, 924, 944, 928 Owners - Are they still a lower class of humans?
 

This is for the 911 owners. You other clowns stay out of it. Are they still not really deserving of the Porsche marque? Or, are those old POS cars starting to get some cred?

I honestly don't know. There's a punk in town with a barely running POS 944 who thinks he's the shiznit. The stigma still looks alive from my POV.

The 928 is the only one that I still see cheaply. A genuinely nice late model 944 is a $10k car, they were maybe $5k a few years ago. I bought a mint 951 in 2005 for $7400, good luck finding a nice one for anywhere near that. 914 is getting sucked up by the air cooled frenzy, nice ones have easily doubled in the last few years. 914-6.......forget about it.

Yet the poor 928 still languishes. I don't know if it will ever really be embraced.

I consider anyone who actually OWNS a Porsche is welcome here...

After about 155 MPH, my friends 928GTS crushes my turbo...and it's not even breaking a sweat!

Scary part is that Porsche intended to replace the 911 with the 928!

The other models Motion mentions are what I call aspirational Porsches. They deserve the badge and are a great way to sample a taste of the Porsche magic. My first car was a lowly euro-engined '77 924, and it was good enough to hook me on the marque, and led to 911 lust.. I upgraded to a 944, then more than 20 911s over the years.

The Boxster is today's aspirational Porsche. The SUVs and sedans on the other hand...I still can't bring myself to consider them worthy of the badge no matter how good (for their class) they are.

Perhaps value is a function of attrition. As the total population numbers of these cars decreases, the collectibility of these cars increases.

Just based on what I see around here....
I was seeing good examples of 944 cars around here for mid 3s before the 944 Cup series really became popular. Then the cars started getting bought up. Now a good 944 will cost you $10k (as the previous poster noted).

Are they any good?
I have owned 924, 944, long hood, SC and now a 996.
The only one I hated was the 924.

Would I own a 928? Oh, yeah.
I may regret it, but as an outsider looking in, I really like the car's body styling - in spite of it's 80's interior.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Boxsters and Caymans. We won't even mention Cayennes. I think Panameras are legit.

I've always loved the 911, but I also swooned for the 928 back when I was a kid. I loved to see them in the magazines. I'd love to drive a nice one.

A 928 was my first Porsche. I didn't want a 911, because they were too common in SoCal. It was a 1980 Euro model, owned by the police chief of East Berlin. It wasn't very reliable and ended up costing too much in maintenance, so I offed it. When it was running good, it could cruise at insane speeds totally rock solid. It was running on half cylinders when I pretty much gave it away. Was glad to see that turd go. I have always lusted after a nice GTS, though.

Then of course there's the iconic Porsche.....;)

When I was young I went for a ride in a new 84 928 and thought it was the greatest thing ever. After owning a 740il and having a best buddy as a Porsche mech I will never own a 928 or 944.

I don't give a rats arse what you 911 snobs think. I like my 944 and that's all that matters...

Now to your sub par human comment... I think I could find a few 911 owners that fall into that class. ;)

Personally, I never have dug the 924/928/944 variants and 914s do nothing for me.

I have driven a 944S2 and was duly impressed with the performance but for me the pinnacle of Porsche is the 911 in any configuration.

There aren't many Porsches around here but if I happen to run across one I try to talk to the owner, no matter what model they have.


Many years ago, someone reminded that there is always with a better version of whatever you have. We were talking cars but you could apply that to most anything.

My stuff is not that great which makes it pretty easy to be humble. :D

I have an old 911 and a fully track ready 944S2. The S2 is a great car. The seating position is better than the 911. It's a lot of fun and a very competent car.

928s....everyone I meet that owns one is slightly crazy (think of all the 928 owners that have been banned here....j928s4, snowman, that guy in S Carolina, sniper...). So, does the 928 attract crazies or Make you crazy?

914s, great little cars, seems like the nicest guys always own them. Has anyone ever devised a better shifting mechanism with cables anything?

928s, I get, phenomenal driving cars. I am always on the lookout for a tower of pain, I don't think I will ever have one though there is a long-time adult owned 80 Euro I found I'd like to look at.

944s, I just don't get these cars, have driven a few 86s and 87 S2s, never understood the allure. Or maybe the couple I've driven were set-up like Buicks. Have never driven a 944T, I'm sure that would be a different car.

Just came home from a long drive, had fun with a 991 on the highway for about 20 miles. No racing or anything, just some short scoots up to 100 and checking out each others' cars.

I miss my 944 now more than I ever imagined. My 2011 jetta tdi is a big step up from my beater 944 but the 944 was a lot more fun to drive, and I could do all the maintenance myself. Its tempting to get another one but I need to get my 911 on the road
