Securing flat screen TV on stand
 

Any folks here have bought straps to secure a flat TV to a stand (not to the wall) and keep it from falling on the grandkids. What kits are you using or are you fabricating something up on your own?

What kit works best? any ideas?

Be happy to ship you an older CRT in trade. I guarantee you won't knock it over!


Seriously - my flat screen is on my wall. It came with some legs - but yeah they weren't that large.

Pretty much all the flat screens in hotels are bolted down, and you can't see the bolts which looks nice. I'd look for that type of base.

I decided since we're in quake country I didn't want my set toppling over. Harbor Freight to the rescue.

Scott, that's better than nothing, but I really doubt that would keep it in place during an earthquake. Those clamps are for light duty. If you want to stay with clamps, I'd recommend metal C-clamps.

The stuff Sid mentioned would be much more secure.

Maybe screw some eye-bolts into a stud, then attach a couple decent wires to the back of the tv with metal hardware?

A single small bolt through that hole in the stand is how I would do it....assuming whatever it's sitting on isn't a priceless family heirloom :p

We bought a kit with two straps. They are attached to the mounting bracket location on the back of the TV and then screwed into the back of the TV stand. IIRC the brand was Quakehold.

Our Samsung 55" LED weighs about 36 lbs, but we bought straps that could secure much more weight than that. Never can be too safe with a toddler and cats in the house. :)

If we have a quake that can shake that clamp loose, I can guarantee you I'll have bigger problems to worry about than just my TV falling over.
Also note that the weak point of that clamp (the pivot at the base of the orange handle) has already been replaced by a bolt. It's now a 'medium duty' version of the light duty one from HF. =;>)
Yes, that is a 'priceless family heirloom' as it's my original O'Sullivan stereo rack from the mid-70's filled with over 200 lbs of stereo gear. If it falls over I'm sure the wall will be on top of it too.
