RYE whiskey!
teach me fellas!
i just finished (very slowly) my first bottle of rye. Templeton. i might like it better than scotch. it is less floral, less "bite-y". i like it. what next? any recommendations that wont break the bank? Bullit rye? |
Obviously you are a person of good taste.
I like the smokey flavor, but to me many scotches are too "sharp". Some American bourbons and whiskeys are good, but many (like JD) are very over-rated. IMHO, rye is just about perfect. American rye whiskey - a primer: American Rye Whiskey: A Primer | The Whiskey Reviewer Some people may cast aspersions, but I still like Old Overholt rye. The Bulliet Rye (green label) is a nice choice at a reasonable price point.
Costco in my area had it for a great price this past summer. Cooper Drinking a Rye IPA right now... |
First thing is don't buy Templeton...
Lawsuit against Templeton Rye maker gets green light On a recommendation from this board I tried Ritttenhouse Rye (Heaven Hill), it is fantastic stuff and probably half the price Templeton. I also really enjoy a couple other Heaven Hill offerings, Evan Williams Single Barrel and Elijah Craig 12yr. Their quality far far above what you would expect by the price. Here is some good reading for you: http://thebourbontruth.tumblr.com http://chuckcowdery.blogspot.com |
I'm new to rye as well. I went to a bar and tried a few. The two I remember was Angel's Envy and Whistle Pig. I found I prefer bourbon and rye over scotch. I probably need to try scotch again.

I received a bottle of Sazerac rye for Christmas.
Very tasty. Delicious. |

Angel's Envy Rye is my pick.

My kids gave me a bottle of Russell’s Reserve 6 Year Rye for Christmas. Never having had rye before I was impressed. I don't know how to compare it to others as I have never had any, but I really like this stuff.

Scotch, bourbon and rye shouldn't even really be discussed as a group - they're as different as vodka and gin. The best approach would be to discover what you like within one of those families. Scotch tends to be more sharp and defined, even amongst blended scotches. Single malts are very sharp and defined, very precise, if that makes sense. Rye is sweeter, but more simple. Bourbon is the sweetest, and usually very complex. Of the varieties available here, there tends to be less difference between the various brands than scotches or ryes.

Old overholt is an incredible value for a lighter rye. Good for cocktails or just for chugging straight from the $14 bottle. (Don't do that, kids) I'm finally finding wild turkey rye in the store - it's nice but not too "ryeish" - more like a better balanced version of their bourbon. |
Rye will make ya take back sheet you never stole. It's only good for coughs, colds, sore holes And removing varnish. Stay away from it kids!

I could never aquire a taste for that stuff because for the life of me couldn't convince myself it would be worth it. |
Angels envy,
Bulleit Rye, Dickel rye, Redemption, Whistle Pig, Templeton rye, Cooper city, Filibuster, Smugglers notch, Hookers house, W. H. Harrison rye Are all made in the same factory in Indiana. |
I think the mgp list is 2 or 3 times longer... Whistlepig is Canadian, but labeled Vermont.

Funny, that this post should happen. I have never been a fan of:
Vodka - boring Gin - at 16 had a bad experience...can't go back Tequila - Same as above at 19 Bourbon - OK, never really did anything for me Canadian or Irish Whiskey and Scotch were "my drink" Recently however, after a woman introduced me to making manhattan's with Rye, I have recently been turned on to rye. We used Jim Beam Rye which I really liked. Just seemed like a smoother taste for my evening drink. I am exploring Rye now. Just bought another bottle to try. Pow-wow Botanical Rye - Brought to you by Georgetown Trading Co. I like this. Nice flavor. In line with that, over christmas, I toured Mount Vernon and for a VERY hefty price, you can buy a bottle of George Washington Rye from his original distillery. |
Where did you pick up the Pow Wow? That sounds like it's worth a try!
I am a fan of strong botanical gin as well. I also have a small orchard of Valencia Oranges and like anything citrus. Cooper |
