Arizona Pelicans...time to pay it Forward!!!
I could use some help. Heading over this weekend for a falconry meet:
http://arizonafalconers.com/?p=632 Looking for some places for either jack rabbits or cottontails. The desert is a big place, so I don't mind driving...+- 50 miles each way. Thx for the help!

Not sure what you're looking for. If the event is in Casa Grande, isn't that where you're gonna be? I don't think I've seen a jack rabbit around here, but the regular old cotton tails are everywhere all the time. I work in an office park in Scottsdale and see them all day every day around the parking lot. You can't miss. You won't be far from Sonoran Nat. Monument, which is very pristine desert and full of wildlife. I've seen plenty of wild horses there too.

That's where the festivities are to be...but we're mobile all day long. California's was last weekend and I drove anywhere from 12-80 miles each way trying to get onto game. California has a ton more private property, tho. Unfortunately, Phoenix metro has a large closure area. I don't know if it will also affect Scottsdale. I'll sniff around there for sure! Thanks, Ricardo.

We were talking about this at breakfast!
. You should be able to find some out around casa grande, just not sure what the restrictions are on where you can go.

Other than the yards with grass in my neighborhood, don't know of any places to find bunnies. Is this a spectator friendly event?

Not really as falconers are all out and hunting. If you're free friday or saturday, let me know and you can tag along...we usually hunt alone, but she's hunted w/ my son, brother, employees, etc. I'll send a pm w/ my contact info...if you want to meet up, great! The host hotel:
Casa Grande Hotels: Holiday Inn Casa Grande Hotel in Casa Grande, Arizona is where you can see lots of the birds and falconers. They will have a "weathering yard"...basically a place where people put their birds when not hunting...like a corral. They are staked out on perches. You never know what will show up. Last weekend in Ca. there was a Snowy owl, a European Great Horned Owl, countless falcons and hawks...as well as micro hawks like kestrals and merlins.

Jim, to narrow your search for prey, you may try calling Bass Pros Shop in Mesa. Talk to the hunting dept. I'm sure they give you some ideas where to go close to Cass Grande.
Their Phone - 602-606-5600 Good Luck. Beautiful Bird!
