Portland O Your Recommendations

Headed to Portland Oregon to Look at some schools. I want to go to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville and sample some local brews. I think we will see the coast.

Give me some must see things around the city. It's been awhile since I have been there. Like 30 Years !

well there is always Voodoo Doughnut

Nostril Cheese 02-10-2015 05:32 PM

PM me. Im out of town at the moment but glad to show you around once Im back. What interests you?

Things to see for sure:

Powell's City of Books
Food Carts (all over)
Microbrews (all over)
Mt. Tabor
Columbia River Gorge about 30 miles east of Portland
Evergreen Aviation Museum about 40 miles SW of Portland. WELL worth it.

Voodoo Doughnut is overrated.

If you are going to the coast, you migh check out the Tillamook Air Museum. Tillamook Air Museum I like it because it has prop planes from the past and you can get close. Not a super polished, high brow experience, but very cool. I also hear that there is a autos and airplane museum up the Columbia Gorge in Hood River that is great.

I think the first question is, when are you coming and other than airplane museums, what do you like? Portland and beer is a no-brainer.

+1 for

Powell's books,
Mary's bar,
Everyday Music

(all these within 3 blocks of each other.)

+1 on don't worry about the doughnut place.

Acropolis isnt half bad steak.

We are going to stop a the CR gorge for a while.

Any Aviation venue is a sure stop.

My kids live a sheltered life in Montana they want to see weird folks and sites. I sort of like that too.

Wheres the good sushi?

LWJ 02-10-2015 08:35 PM

Weird? Just walk around. Closer to food carts is good as the food attracts them weirdo type folks. Coffee does as well. We also have lots of that.

rusnak 02-10-2015 08:39 PM

Oh yes. Portland has lots of weird. Don't use the vending machine ATMs. Don't pay the city parking lot machine. You have to pay the weird guys in the little huts. And don't even try to pump your own gas.

The kids might like OMSI, or if they are young enough, the Children's Museum up by the zoo. Evergreen Aviation is really cool, and yes, just walking around the town can give you all the weird you want. Friendly, but weird.

The Japanese Garden may be small, but it's absolutely gorgeous.

There are great hikes along the Columbia River Gorge. You can park your car and go for 3 or 4 hours, hit 3 or 4 waterfalls, and then finish off with Sunday brunch at Multnomah Falls.

Don't leave a single valuable item in your vehicle. Car prowels are off the charts. Do visit the food trucks and drink some good beer.

Manzanita on the coast is a great spot to visit a little south of Canon Beach.

Bamboo. Literally across the street from my house.

You want weird? I'll show you plenty. :D

Oh, and Portland is also known for its sex industry. Something like the highest per capita for exotic dancers. SmileWavy

Gogar 02-11-2015 06:45 AM

Kids? Oh, never mind about Mary's bar then. :)
