Car is in my backyard. Salvage could be a massive hailstorm we had a couple years back, or ...

4 owners - is that normal?

Seeing the engine from below makes me cringe. What's with that sump? :p

I am the second owner on my 993 - and only because I was too young and poor to buy it new. :)

That engine looks fine from underneath to me. Thats's the cosmoline that Porsche sprays on their engines prior to shipment. It was on my 996 for years and years before it finally seemed to disappear slowly. I was told I could expend a lot of elbow grease to scrub it off, but why bother?

onewhippedpuppy 10-06-2017 10:22 AM

That's a really nice car with great options, low mileage, clean, and very high dollar tasteful upgrades. I bet it hits $40k.

The sump is cosmoline, all of the water cooled cars look like that unless somebody goes to town with brushes and a lot of degreaser.

speeder 10-06-2017 11:04 AM

The air cooled cars came w the same cosmoline sprayed all over the bottoms. Some dealers, (or customers), removed it promptly when the cars were new but if it wasn't, it got baked on quickly. Same w Mercedes-Benz, BMW and probably every other car that had to ride on a ship to get here. The dealer where I worked back on the '80s had a 55 gallon drum of special cosmoline remover soap and power washed all the bottoms off when they came off the truck.

Many dealers did not, particularly in parts of the country where things rust. It could protect aluminum from salt but man, it's ugly when baked on for years and not so easy to remove later.

What on earth do you mean by "normal"?

It's an 12 y.o. car. Most people get a new car every few years, some as often as 2 years. Very, very few people keep a car for decades. You would be the freak in this story.

At any rate, it's irrelevant in judging a used car. It's a typical, *wrong question* that everyone asks about cars for sale. I've bought dozens of cars and I only care about the condition of the car. I don't care if it's had one owner or 10. And I see absolutely no correlation between one long time owner and great maintenance or condition. You want to buy a car that the last guy did all the expensive stuff to, even if he had it for 6 months.

I've also found that the reason someone is selling or that they are selling quickly after buying means nothing, usually. It is not always related to it being a "good car." Condition, records and your own PPI/due diligence are all that matters.

And I'll bet you are off by $5k, give or take. These cars are extremely common and half of them at least are silver.

"Is it common that cars 12 years old have 4 owners?"
"Is that a bad sign?"

I guess you think
yes
no

on those two questions.

I bought my 993 from the first owner when it was 9 years old. I kept it for another 11 ... so far. Apparenty I am the nut, but I'd argue that these newer cars are more disposable and less "special" than the older ones.

Unlike most internet arguments, we will have a definitive answer to this one.

So, you are thinking it will only hit $35k-ish? I'd take that bet.

Are these cars common? Sure.

Super clean, low mileage examples with the "right" options (namely sport seats)? Not so much, IMO...at least not under $40k.

aigel 10-06-2017 04:43 PM

My bet is also closer to 35k than 40. That's then anything 37.5k or less. Maybe the great pictures and description helps prop it up? Stay tuned! :)

I'm taking that into account. That seems to have more value on this thread than in actual sales prices. :)
