Windows 8 seems to be an icon driven which loads up the screen with a bunch of drivel. 10 will probably be worse & even more compatible with "touch screens".
I'd rather gouge my eyes out than use Win 8. If you went with that over a Mac OS, then you are a hard core Windows guy.

Are Windows people bad people? What is wrong with them? Is it genetic? A virus? Something else?

I'm having problems, I think?. The area where I'm stumbling with is Outlook mail,,,this might be working..... and transferring my pictures to Windows 8. I downloaded all of them onto windows and now I can't find them.....they were there, I looked at them......but when I switched screens....POOF! The are gone and I'm left with an apparently empty folder......go figure.

The Apple is the wife's bed room. I'll fool with it and see if I can come to terms with it.
None is this is fun but necessary. The good news is that every day is Saturday....now youz guys get to work.

BTW, this info may be badly dated, but last I read was that 80% of the worlds computers have Windows OS on them.

That may be like saying 50% of people drive Toyota Camrys ;-)

PS: JP in case you didn't know, there's a service pack for Windows 8 and you can make it look and behave like Win7. No tiles... Google that (on the mac) ;-)

I have had a Dell and an HP laptop. The most recent is the HP with Windows 8. The $$ outlay for these is minor compared to an Apple. Next time round will likely go with an Apple due to their product support and longevity.

I have both a Macbook Pro 13.3 and an Asus touch screen laptop running Windows 8.

The Apple is slightly prettier and significantly faster-- it is also slightly newer being 2 years old versus 4 years old. The Asus also gets fingerprints all over the screen due to touchscreen use.

For work, I struggle using the Mac. If I need to run MS Excel or the OpenOffice equivalent, I will use the Asus laptop. Even the Apple genuis at the Apple Store could not get the MS Excel for Macs to open across the entire screen. Very frustrating. Also, it won't allow me to save different types of documents in a single folder. Again, very frustrating.

I also prefer Google Chrome which is loaded on both but has difficulty running properly on the Mac. Safari is okay but lacks all the bells and whistles of Chrome.

Pelicanparts runs much smoother on the Mac though. I also really like my iPhone. However, Macs are fairly counter-intuitive and difficult to use for many applications for me.

Sorry, start here:

Most of Xerox's Suit Against Apple Barred - NYTimes.com

The appeal never manifested.

Xerox seems to have lost because it waited as described here:

http://digitalcommons.law.scu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1099&context=chtlj

Either way, Apple did take Xerox's property, Xerox was lazy.

Neither of those problems make any sense.

What version of Excel?

Oh, and than there is the history of Taligent. Read up on that and you will see just see how Larry Tesler's memory may be selective.

Don't confuse what was going on at PARC with what the corporate folks where thinking. PARC was very much like University research department. PARC wanted their ideas to get out and be used. They weren't so good at making actual products.

Basically, Xerox wanted to cash in the work they did not protect. Apple took what PARC had done and made it a viable commercial product. PARC's windowing setup was quite primitive compared to what Apple (Bill Atkinson) came up with.

That's very strange. I do that all the time on both my MacBook Pro and the iMac at work.

LOL, this is computing 101. Of course any computer can do both of these and has been able to for at least 20 years.

MS Excel for Mac works better than Excel for PC run in Parallels. I have to agree that MS Excel for Mac works very well on a MacBook Pro. I have all kinds of documents of every type in many folders. Something is very odd.

Here's a funny story. A long time ago I did DOD and DOE cost accounting. I was hired by a DOE contractor to find a $1M variance in their contract billings. The staff was all using Lotus 123, had 14 inch screens that were black and green. 1993. I had a Mac IIsi and a massive 19" monitor, and Excel.

I couldn't use 123 and had no idea how anyone could. What a joke. I convinced the CFO to let me bring in my computer. Found the missing $1M in a week with huge full screen spreadsheets. It was like they had seen God when they peered into them. Couldn't believe it.
