Maddy Middleton

8 year old girl in Santa Cruz, CA was tied up, beaten, raped, murdered and dumped in a garbage bin "Allegedly" by a 15 year old acquaintance described by neighbors as a good kid. It's heart breaking and makes me sick to my stomach. Monsters are among us - even close by so watch your kids. Time to have another safety talk with my girls. It is so scary to be a parent. :(

An unthinkable crime. Losing a child has to be heart breaking, much worse under these circumstances.

I saw the news story yesterday when returning from a Search/Rescue mission where we found a 8 year old that had drowned in Lake Cle Elum. I had only 3 hrs sleep due to searching over 2 days:

I hate these stories. My daughter is 9. I'm not sure what I would do if anything like this were to happen to her or my son.

It seems like unless you keep them under lock and key something bad MIGHT happen to them.

Scary. And I have 3 daughters.

What has this world become when a 15 year old can rape and murder a child?
The terrible horror this child went through just rips my heart out.

In Jax, a little kid disappeared and it has been playing out like a bad movie. The mom, a stripper, the boyfriend, a suspect, in jail, while searching retention ponds in the area, found a few other bodies

Jacksonville police: Case of missing toddler Lonzie Barton moving towards murder | jacksonville.com
Quote:

There was only slight solace midday Monday for searchers hoping to learn the whereabouts and what happened to 21-month-old Lonzie Barton, whose disappearance early Friday reached another 24 hours.
“I know where he is not,” said Chief Tom Hackney of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. “We’re working through a list of where he is not and that is going to put us where he could be and where he is.”

As the number of places Lonzie might be is narrowing, the tenor of the investigation also is changing, moving from an abduction investigation and toward a murder case, Hackney said.

“It has to,” he said.

About 200 officers Monday continued tramping through woods and probing ponds, following rail tracks and picking through garbage to find the blond toddler last seen with his mother’s boyfriend.

Sophisticated sonar was being used to map retention areas and waterways, and K-9 teams from several agencies joined with dive team members and law enforcement officers from as far as Miami-Dade to search the city’s south end along the Philips Highway corridor near Interstate 295.

An 11-member team from Texas EquuSearch also joined the efforts Monday.

Searchers had been there over the weekend, and it remains the primary focus area because that’s where the investigation has pointed following dozens of tips and follow-up, Hackney said.

William Ruben Ebron Jr., the 32-year-old boyfriend of Lonzie’s mother, once lived in the area, Hackney said. He has been arrested on two counts of child neglect involving the disappearance of Lonzie, whose 5-year-old sister also was in his care while their mother worked.

Ebron has stopped talking with police, Hackney said. While cooperating earlier, the chief said there were gaps in what Ebron told them.

“The stories that he tells don’t add up,” Hackney said.

The disappearance was not a magic act, he said.

“This child didn’t just ‘poof,’ disappear,” he said.

Some gaps were being filled by Laundromat and storage unit surveillance cameras detailing the time before Ebron’s call shortly after 2 a.m. that Lonzie was missing.

The intense search even turned up the bones of an adult male Monday, but the find is unrelated to the missing boy and likely not a homicide. Over the weekend a citizen also found bones during a search, but they appeared to be an animal.

About 10 a.m. Monday officers including deputies from Nassau County also were checking a Kangaroo store trash bin on Philips Highway.

By 11 a.m. police, K-9 teams, firefighters and others began to congregate in the Avenues Walk area off Philips. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department had several pieces of heavy equipment on scene.

Police have received 125 tips nationwide, Hackney said.

In one from another state there was a photo of a boy whose resemblance to Lonzie was striking. When shown to Lonzie’s mother, Lonna Lauramore, she said it was not her son.

Lauramore, 25, was at work at Wacko’s club when Ebron called 911 and said the boy was abducted from outside their Ravenwood Apartments on Old Kings Road. He told police the boy must have been snatched when his 1995 orange Honda Civic with a black hood was stolen with the toddler inside. Lonzie’s 5-year-old sister was with her brother and Ebron when he vanished.

She has been “as helpful as a 5-year-old can be,” Hackney said. There’s a lot he can’t share, he said, but “Just know this: She’s helping as much as she can. She’s with her mom, where Lonzie should be.”

“Whatever happened that night was not a good thing,” and she likely was around when that happened.

John Harrell of the state Department of Children and Families said the agency is investigating the case.

After initially cooperating with police, Ebron was detained on probation-violation charges in drug cases from Baker County. The child-neglect arrest came later.

Hackney said he watched an interview with Ebron’s father on TV and appreciates him wanting to believe his son, but “Ruben Ebron has the answers that we need. He was the last to be caring for him. If he would step forward, do the right thing ... that will stop our search efforts and begin justice.”

He referred to him by his middle name Ruben, which he apparently often goes by.

Monday, Ebron’s father declined to speak with the Times-Union.

The chief said Ebron has contacted people while in jail.

“My fear is he will continue to stretch the truth or manipulate the truth like he’s done with us with his family,” Hackney said.

The State Attorney’s Office also issued a statement on the case, saying: “State Attorney Angela Corey, the SAO’s two homicide directors and two experienced prosecutors assigned to this case have been working with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office around the clock since Friday to find Lonzie Barton.”

People have been killing children for years. We the public just never heard about it as much unless the people were famous like the Lindbergh baby. Now it seems that both the victims and the killers are getting younger and younger. Like the two 10 yr olds in the UK who kidnapped a two year old from a mall and beat his head in with a rock because he cried.

When I was a kid I used to play outside with my friends till dark. Never worried that something bad would happen to me.

Now bad stuff happens with such regularity that it hardly makes the news.

This one happened on the 23rd. Never made the news up here. "Two teenage brothers were being held on Thursday in the stabbing deaths of their parents and three siblings — ages 12, 7 and 5 — in their home in a suburb of Tulsa, Okla., the police said."

How about these two worthless pieces of crap?

Oklahoma Police Find 5 Family Members Stabbed to Death - ABC News

They stabbed their own parents to death and then turned on to their own brothers and sisters. The wanted to go bigger and start killing even more but they were arrested. Their goal was to be more famous than the Columbine killers.

The media would do a great service to the country if they referred to this two as low life murder one and low life murder two. Never ever again show their photos and never mention their names in a new story again.

That will happen right after peace in the middle east.

how did they link the killer to Maddy?

RIP little girl. i'm a complete stranger and i feel the pain. i cannot fathom what her parents must be going thru. being somewhat local, we have been blasted by the news. i kinda avoid it, only listening in hoping they found her safe.

You don't suppose that we have been teaching children for the last twenty years that truth and morality is all relative and human beings are just animals has anything to do with this?

When I was young I was the maintenance supervisor at a juvenile jail (I know not the PC name) some of the poop these kids did was frickin unbelievable.

Sadly, this kind of thing is not new at all. I'm gonna go out on a limb and even say that it was worse pre-21st century. People are animals after all.

Oh Haha 07-30-2015 12:44 PM

.....but people seem to be more outraged that a dentist shot some dumba$$ lion in another country.

Who is standing up for Maddy?

Are there protestors at this little girl killer's residence or even outside the jail he is in?

Doubt it.

I haven't seen anything on the national news about this.

This. Slowly and deliberately. If the parents were held accountable with the kids, I wonder if it would have any effect.

So sad it brings tears to my eyes. I have a 13 year old daughter. This is my worst nightmare.

930addict 07-31-2015 09:44 AM

Well we had another safety talk with my girls. We do it every six months to keep it fresh in their heads. They're 8 and 9. We spent about an hour talking about personal safety including gun saftey. In talking about situations they may come across I said that someone might look and be very nice and tell them they want to show them something in order to get them by themselves. My 9 year old said, "I would ask him if he wants to see my dads guns." I thought that was funny.

Amen. The thought of one of my girls ever coming to this type of harm...it's unthinkable. If someone ever hurt one of my kids, especially to this extent, they'd never make it to trial.

I had a safety meeting with my kids on the way to see a movie yesterday.(Hey, they can't ignore me if locked in a moving car.)

We talked about stranger danger and what to do if they find themselves put into a situation.

As we entered the theater where our movie was playing I pointed out the EXIT signs and gave them instructions on what to do if anything happens inside the theater.

for some reason, felt compelled to discuss the recent shootings at that time. Pretty sad that you have to talk to your kids about what to do if they encounter an active shooter while watching a Disney movie.:(
