QUICK! Dog EMT question....

My wife's dog has just started acting wierd.. panting...slobbering.. standing, but not moving, like a heat stroke or dehydration, but he hasn't been out all day.
My wife is freaking out.
The dog is not drinking, however..
But the dog is eating.
However, he does look like he just ran 10 miles in 100 degree heat. ( He looks like s$#!)
So...
(I know very little about dogs)
I am trying to be optimistic..
He is still breathing....
Isn't a good appetite a good thing for dogs?
I have not found a dentist's crossbow bolt in his side.
My wife is pessimistic/ calling her mother/ bemoaning his death (he is old- but we adopted him- we don't know how old...
Thoughts...

p.s.- we are one hour from an emergency vet (rural)...so that is why I am posting on pelican. If I was really worried- obviously I wouldn't be posting. My wife is however, worried. I am concerned and looking for something to say positive.
p.s.s.- In the time it took me to write this.He seems to have calmed down. Still a little freaky though.
I am looking for reassurance on the "If a dog has an appetite- he's good thing...That is a "good thing", right?

What are some other things(if any ) to consider here?

Thanks,
Ron

If is was me I'd try pouring cool water over him.

Accidental poisoning is a possibility

Go now. Let a vet diagnose what appear to be acute symptoms.

Now I recall the symptoms...Yes, sounds like maybe snail bait or something else.
Good one, Eric.

Thanks already for the feedback!
He has calmed down completely, breathing normal, no panting, slobbering, relaxed, and back to his old self (sleeping)
We cooled him down and he has not been in any pantries with potential poisons..
Thanks for the advice.. we checked everything.
My daughter has stepped up as doctor and placed bandaids, and took his temp with thermometer and is "singing wheels on the bus."
MY wife is even calmed down... so that's a good thing.
This picture probably looks bad.. but it is pretty much normal for him (bandaids and all!)

Here's him in his all his awake glory (pretty much the lowest energy dog possible!)

That WAS weird though... Will be keeping close eye on him.

Sounds like it could have been a small stroke.

So how's he doing?

Try and keep some Pedialyte and a large catheter syringe (get from your vet) around in case of heat stroke. You can also apply rubbing alcohol to the pads of their feet to help the cooling process. Glad he's doing better.

Hello there folks...
I was going to write an update, but bad news sucks... so...
as a bummer update to this thread, I've got some sad news. My wife did take Budzo into the ER vet, and he was suffering from heart failure. There was really nothing we could do. In the days since, he would have good spells and bad spells, however, the bad spells were ratcheting up in intensity, and as good as the good spells were, it was obvious something was wrong, and progressively worsening. Yesterday afternoon, he couldn't walk at all and was completely miserable. Very up and down weekend. Kinda sucked. Google "heart failure in dogs" and those were pretty much his symptoms. Last night we put him down. Surprisingly, I think my wife is handling better than I am. Our 3 y.o. daughter doesn't really understand it yet, so we'll see how that one goes. Thanks for everyone's feedback last week!

The good news is my wife gets to go dog shopping. She hasn't discussed it yet, but I know it's coming. She found Budzo in a dog pound searching secretly behind my back, so I wouldn't put it past her if she hasn't already been looking. She's done pretty well with choosing dogs, so I'm hoping she will hit it out of the park again like she did with Buddy.

Thanks again!
Ron
