Argh... flippers.
Flippers are getting out of hand. I had three stop to ask if I'll sell my car just this week. I just moved to the area and despite the fact that Grady C. used to live a few blocks away I wouldn't have thought that my neighborhood was car-guy heaven. I'm very careful about opening the garage only when necessary so I can't imagine how many others have driven by. Of course today's flipper made a point of saying that he's a "Porsh enthusiast" and doesn't work for a dealer, he just wants the car for his collection - right. But, since he has too many cars, did I want to buy any? He listed off a few, including a "rare 988". I told I'd be interested only if it came with a bridge, too. After the awkward silence he went back to offering me "big money" for my car. Ugh.
Given how many of these guys must be prowling the streets, there must be enough ignorant people for this to work. |

"I like my car, but everything is for sale. Make me an offer right here. You've got the money on you, right? No? Come back when you have cash and we'll talk."
Never had anyone return. |

hey pete3799! that was the great thing about living in the woods - nobody came up the dirt road. And for certain, nobody came up your driveway without an invitation.
The dog is getting old, but still has a crazy look and sound to her. When she's out in the yard she does a great job keeping away the idiots with restaurant menus and lawn care flyers. |

I think that same guy stopped by my place to buy my '72. He wanted to make sure it had the "Porsche" engine and not the VW one.

Hey, wanna sell your Porshhhh?
The large number of car flipping shows on tv has probably convinced a few losers that there is easy money to be had. Don't worry, they'll all go broke soon enough.

I occasionally venture out to the Houston Craig's List "Wanted" category and am amazed at the number of listings wanting to buy 356s, 912s, 911s, anything connected with air cooleds .
Even Richard Rawlings (Fast and Loud) $$$$ buddy Dennis who does the Jeep stuff has a listing wanting to buy P-Cars..

Hey Gogar, I'm down around Evans and Holly. Two of the guys had white full-size trucks, the third drove a Lexus SUV.
These guys all seem to follow the same script: call yourself an enthusiast, call everyone "bro" and keep the BS flowing (like talking about your collection which you don't really know anything about). |

I like the complements when out (and have gotten a few also) but would be extremely put off and suspicious of anyone stopping at my house and asking about a car (or anything else of mine). I definitely do not advertise what I have (the driveway runs around the back of the house where the garage is, not in view of the street). IMHO more houses should be laid out like this - it deters crime and it lets the house read from the street as a place where people actually live rather than being a barn for storing junk or big SUVs.
The best security against potential thieves is simply not flaunting what you have. Yes I'll drive the cars but I think parking them in front of the house is the same thing as sticking a big neon sign on them saying "come back later and steal me". It's even worse with VWs, because the would-be flippers who've seen the Barrett-Jackson story of the $217,000 bus think that you can still buy them for $500.

Guy came over to look at one of my cars. Made the mistake of telling my wife he was buying to make a profit while on the phone beforehand.
A REAL SELF ABSORBED TOOL. Wasted a great deal of my time talking about himself while barely looking at the car. Seemed disappointed that I knew current values, even though I offered him a fair price, which I knew he wouldn't take. |

The ones I really hate are the ones that don't offer a number, but keep asking "What's the best you'll do?" I just ask back: What the best you will do.

I posted something like it a few weeks ago, a friend told me about a homing device such as cell phone will notify where the car is located because these 2 young Russian guys were looking into my car sticking their heads in there. I got the same BS approach calling me bro and all that BS. They kept offering me cash and want to buy NOW. One guy said to me, "everyone's got a price, so name it". That pissed me off a bit, but I didn't show it and kept my cool.

Then there's the guys who trawl craigslist with "want to buy _____ for a father-son project" or some BS. Every now and then I'll troll them by answering their ad and sending a pic from my archives of a an early 50's 23-window (or somesuch,) with the story "My grandfather had this in his garage and we need to get rid of it because the estate is selling the house; how about $500?"

I had a couple of dorks do that to me recently- pulled up with a FLATBED, wanting to buy any of my stuff- some local exotic / performance lot in town, I don't remember the name.
Wanted my #'s on my cars- I quoted the prices, and the cockeyed guy said "we can't any money at that price..." My response: "So? That's the prices, you want 'em that's what it'll cost." Those car flipper shows are stupid, gives the knucklehead wanna be shysters some new angle to try. Do they really think people are just going to get wet when faced with a few measly dollars? WHo doesn't know what they're holding? It's not 1950 anymore- it's pretty easy to get values on anything anywhere thanks to the internetz. rjp
