I wanna Kubota RTV X1100C with cab, air and heat to navigate the increasingly crappy Michigan roads:

My folks have a ranger, and Ive driven a razr. Fun toys for sure! Haven't heard much about the Can ams though. Do research on reliability and maintenance. I know for a long times the Polaris products were supposed to be the best.

I don't know if the Can-Am quality has improved but it was not good.. Lots of pesky little things..
The Grizzlys are still the king for what I can tell..

It's been a while since I was really up to date on them (I was the finance manager at a multi line power sports dealer). But, the commanders were top of the heap in performance for a couple years - Polaris responded with the rzr 900. In General, expect the can am to be a but further engineered, higher maintenance cost, and possibly more failure prone than a Polaris. But, it's not as though Polaris puts out a bulletproof product either. Both are shamefully unreliable compared to a Kawasaki, Yamaha, or Honda (in my experience). The teryx was always a nice rig but apparently a royal pita to work on. Rhinos started the whole thing but were left in the dust performance wise. Hondas lawyers made it impossible for them to make a fun rig.

My understanding is that Yamaha has come out with something new that is closer or better in performance.

How will it be used? A ranger is not the same as a rzr, like a teryx isn't the same as a mule. Depends what your goal is. Also - new or used? I wouldn't get a can am used.

We ride a lot.... I have friends with everything, there is a reason I bought the Polaris.

Dansvan 08-11-2015 02:18 PM

Up here Polaris has the market. Dont know why though. They break often. CV's, ball joints, tie rods, clutch issues, etc. They are all alot of fun.

Westy 08-11-2015 02:19 PM

I currently ride a Wildcat, my buddy has a RZR 900, and I've ridden with the Can Am. (Leaving for a week of riding on the coast in a few days). I know enuff about all three to help, but as was stated, what kind of riding do you want to do, what is your physical size, and what is your pocketbook like? They all have a + and - , and personal preference is key. Give us a little more info.

Polaris Ranger 900 diesel, love it.

9dreizig 08-12-2015 07:16 AM

Westy, I live in the Virginia City Highlands.. so it will be used to: Hunt on BLM land, plow snow, work around the house, camp, pit vehicle at Sonoma and Laguna Seca, haul Doodles in the dump bed,
possibly put tracks on it and haul a skier or two up the back country.. I'm average build 5'9" 190 lbs..

Westy 08-12-2015 08:31 AM

OK. The Wildcat is a pure sport vehicle, with the nicest suspension of them all. Some folks use them as a work/utility SXS, but not my choice. The Can Am's sit high but are faster, and have less in handling characteristics. Same with the RZR. As a working SXS, the RZR 900 would probably be your best bet with the shorter wheelbase. However I wouldn't rule out a Rhino. LOTS of folks have sunk a lot of money into their Rhinos, only to trade up for a newer faster vehicle. You can get great deals on a tricked out Rhino, but the same goes for a Wildcat, 900, and Maverick. They all break, and have those tight spots when you're working on them. For you, however, it doesn't sound like you'll be riding hard in the dunes or on the trails. The only caveat I can offer is, SXSs are incredibly fun and addicting. A few times out on the trails or a trip to Sand Mountain, and you're gonna want more. But heck,,,,,ya can't take it with you!!

Good luck in your decision!

tedg04 08-12-2015 12:59 PM

Based on what you're saying, I wouldn't look too hard at any of the sport models. The ranger xp will do everything you're talking about better than the maverick or rzr, and likely cost less. It just won't beat them in a race.

Rednine11 08-12-2015 01:03 PM

I agree
Ranger is a great choice for what he wants it for

You definitely want a work horse and not a racer. Lots of good brands out there. I have a Yamaha Grizzly. All I can say is I mistreat the hell out of it and have never had a problem. I pretty much use it for what you describe.

Mark Henry 08-12-2015 02:17 PM

My experience is I've always found side by sides to be flippy and they can't go everywhere a ATV can go. A couple of buddies have Polaris, good machines, but they always seem to be breaking something.
I have a yami, never had any issues other than it's almost impossible to pull over by hand.

911boost 08-12-2015 02:47 PM

Ranger, Rhino or Teryx.

You don't want a Wildcat or Razr as has been mentioned they are more sport than utility. The bed on my friends Razr 900 is just as small as on my 1000.

And I don't agree with the comment Westy on the Wildcat having the best suspension...... With that said, they will all break if you beat on them enough. This is very much like a Ford versus Chevy argument. One of my riding buddies sister has a Wldcat, and I have seat time in it as well as a Teryx.

Facts are there, undeniable. I'm not a brand faithful kind of guy. RZR = Faster. Wildcat = Superior Suspension. Plenty of shootouts in magazines to support this. I ride with RZRs all year.

Seahawk 08-12-2015 03:43 PM

Probably more than you are looking for, but I bought a Ranger 6x6 a few years ago.

It has been flawless and the best piece of gear I own. I have almost three hundred hours on it.

The plow is fully adjustable from the drivers seat and is awesome for what it is. We have actually had a lot of snow here the past two years and my quality of life went way up!
