28 years ago I went to the doctor's office with a swollen lymph node in my neck that, unbenounced to me, was Hodgkins desease stage 3cancer. I went through 3 months of 5 day a week radiation treatments 50 miles from home.........5 years later it came back, and I did 3 full courses of chemotherapy ABVD that (the combonation of the 2 treatments) absolutely wrecked most of my systems. I've had related heart failure, reduced lung capacity, blood clots, and 3 out of 4 salivary glands don't work, along with a dead thyroid. I was in remission for many years until 4 years ago when I had an MRI that showed several lymph nodes in the abdomen growing again......so another 20 chemotherapy treatments and i'm in "remission" again. It's something I will NEVER be cured of because i've always have the feeling that the other shoe is ready to drop.
Most people don't know my health history because I don't let it control me, or my moods, and I appear healthier than most people my age (50 years old 5'10" 185 lbs). I am very active on my farm, riding dirtbikes with my son, and cutting 5-6 cords of wood a year for our woodburner, I also work on other people's and my own cars, and just built a new 104x60 horse barn/indoor riding arena for my wife. I refuse to slow down and mope about things. You tell your niece that ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING, and not to give up, and keep dreaming of a future.....I am ! |
Cancer (in all its various forms) is undiscriminating & one the cruelest diseases known to man. It affects &/or touches all of us in one way or another.

+1 on attitude.
I was 26 with testicular cancer, it was hard for me but harder on the family. 25 years later i still wake up feeling lucky. positive vibes to your niece. |
Best to your niece and all affected. My sister was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at 39 with a 7 and 4 year old. She's two + years out from the hard part of the treatment but is reminded all of the time that once you are diagnosed, the term "cancer free" is a joke. Many in her support group have passed years after being done with treatment. I lost a good buddy a year ago to lymphoma. He was diagnosed in August and gone in October. The healthiest and most fit guy I knew. Life's short. His advice to all of us was "no bucket lists".

In 2002, I lost my first wife then and 5 weeks later, lost my brother. Both to cancer. Wife went through it 2 years, my brother only 7 months, from diagnosis.

Sorry about your wife and brother Vinny. And prayers go out to your Nice 75 Porsche . My little girl would have been 2 tomorrow. Cancer is really hitting hard for us. My good friend Ken, who has been fighting lung cancer relapsed a month or so ago, and he is having a really hard time. Does not look good for him right now.
MY friends Rons wife,, was in remission from her ovarian cancer but she is feeling pains in the same region, and having similar symptoms as she did initially before her diagnosis. She goes back in for testing next week. Does chemo really cure anybody? Seems as if every one of the children that we met in our time at childrens hospital have either passed, or are fighting a really brutal uphill battle right now. I watch all of them daily and it saddens me. . We got real close with another family whose daughter had the same AML as our daughter, and they were about the same age. She just relapsed, and seems to be heading down the same road . She is having all sorts of complications. Watching anybody fight cancer is a real eye opener. I had to X mas shop for my daughter who I knew was going to die in a few weeks. I was holding a little dollie in line at the mall, and just crying my fvking eyes out in line. I must have looked like a real whacko to the people around me FVK Cancer !!!! |
Cancer is a *****! About this time last year my mom was diagnosed with triple neg breast cancer and Thuys dad was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. It is all in the attitude. Tackle it head on and don't forget that life's worth fighting for. Mom made it through and got the all clear in May, we are running a half marathon together on Sunday!!!
Thuys dad is on an oral chemo. He has some side effects but it's got him stabilized and thy think he could have another 10 years. Get second opinions of what the doctors say doesn't add up. Fight it until you can't fight anymore. And Fred, our thoughts will be with you tomorrow. Hurts to see what you guys went through with that little fighter. Seeing kids in that shape tears me up. :( |

But if they ever actually cure cancer, think of all the people who will be suddenly employed!

I am 11 years from a colon cancer stage 3a resection.
I wish your niece the best. It is worth it. There is life after treatment. I actually forget I had cancer for a few minutes once in a while. May she have the same luck and success Gary |
Good luck to your niece. I hope she makes a full recovery. There is hope in the future of this disease;
