I'd forgotten about this thread. I was walking the dogs the other day and saw 3 or 4 old Asian folks walk up to the yard and start pointing and talking about the tree. I approached and asked if they knew what it was and one said "It's a Chinese Grapefruit." I came back and sure enough, Pomelo. The site said that when the fruit is yellow, that it's probably ripe. The tree was full of huge yellow fruit, so I snagged one and brought it home.

I peeled it and got down to the fruit. The skin on the sections is pretty tough, so I peel the sections and eat the meat. It's not that hard to peel the sections, but it is a little time consuming. You could probably cut it in half and eat it like a grapefruit with a spoon if you want, but I like the peel method better. They taste a lot like a grapefruit, but are more mild in flavor and not sour and not super sweet either. I've swiped 3 now while walking the dogs.

pomelos are freaking delicious

looks like a baby Pomelo, aka Grapefruit, I also have Meyers Lemon and they just look like a more rounded smooth skin lemon, and nothing like that on the inside.

around here Grapefruit are about $1.25 and Pomelo are about $4.

Yep.

And filling. Even with all of the pith, there's still TONS of edible fruit on each one.

I love grapefruit but they give me terrible heartburn. Pomelos are just mild enough to avoid that issue.

Complaint: they 'spensive at HEB :D

I dig the citrus. Mandarin oranges and Meyer lemons ripe now, navel oranges are close, and the pink grapefruit has a long way to go.

citrus does not breed true
to get a known type you have to graft a branch on root stock

if you grow a seed who knows what you get
we planted orange seeds and got huge limes

True of just about any tree fruit. Every edible apple tree is a native crab apple under the ground.

I saw pomelos at Whole Foods tonight. $4 each, and they didn't look ripe unless they are maybe a slightly different type than the tree is the neighborhood.

And you can graft multiple types of citrus onto one trunk and have a single tree grow multiple types of fruit. My uncle had a tree that had 19 varieties of citrus, and his old boss had a tree with 31 types on a single trunk.
