How To Estimate Fair Gun Trade-In Price

Thinking of trading in one gun to fund another gun purchase.

The trade-in would be a Seattle-built Detonics .45ACP Combat Master, stainless, extra mags, excellent condition.

How can I find out what a fair trade-in price would be? What's a good source for retail pricing, and then what percent of retail is a fair trade price?

The purchase would be . . . undecided, maybe a Colt HBAR AR15 (dealer asking $1500), maybe a S&W Model 41 (a shooter w/ one area of light pitting, dealer asking $1300). Obviously cash would be involved too.

I'm not super experienced in this area but I have used gunbroker.com to get a ball park number when I have considered selling.

Incidentally, the dealer told me the recent mass shootings have caused only a slight increase in his business.

His AR inventory was pretty light, only about seven. Almost all Colts. Two years ago he had twenty or more, with lots of Bushmaster etc.

Why not offer it to a Pelicanhead? What are you asking/want/would take for it?

If I had it prior to 1986 I wouldn't sell it. There's not a record of it.

What was the price you paid for the .45, how old is it and how many times has it been fired?

Jeepers, these things are selling on Gunbroker for average $975. And a dealer will only give me 50-60% of retail price as trade-in. So the trade-in route will lose me like $400. No bueno.

Duh! U should keep the Detonics as it is an appreciating asset while the Colt AR is a depreciating one. Also the S&W' 41's seem to be hot at the moment and are climbing. Lots of 41's around but not so many Detonics... I likeee the old High Standards.

So the question to ask yerself is what do ya have in the Detonics? Do ya really need to trade it? The money in it ain't goin anywhere..you can always get it out if needed.

Buy a used AR...Novoskes are primo...BCM's are kool. SR 15's are beothchin. U might say these are carriage trade hardware.

Or U can buy a Kalashnikov 47...Arsenal makes em right here in LV....milled receivers side folders are da bomb... they only make a few at a time and they go fast.

Gunbroker auction 514685976

I am a complete noob at GB, so if anyone wants to take a look and tell me how amateur my auction looks, I am all ears!

I hated gun trades at the pawn shop. Typically I asked how much they wanted for their gun, negotiated a figure, gave them the cash, and then began the negotiation on my gun. Take it or leave with the (my) money.
Like trading cars, you'll come out better if you can sell it yourself and then make your deal with money in your pocket.

Thanks, red. I should have. Idi0t.

So, since I've got my pistol case open and we're talking guns. Just wanted to show you guys two more guns.

First is my old P08. I bought this thing some thirty years ago, I think it cost $300. It is nothing more than a shooter, because it's not parts matching. I had a gunsmith in Hollywood work the trigger and put dots on the rear sight. My favorite gun to shoot. But the extractor broke a few years ago. I plan to have a local gunsmith - when I can find one - install the replacement extractor that I have, and install target sights. My eyes are too bad for the stock sights. It will be further devalued but it is, again, just a shooter. Three mags for this one.

This is my dad's Single Six, mine for thirty years now. No plans to do anything to this one. It's what I use to teach people (kids) to shoot.
