RARE original 1959 PORCHE 356 D | classic cars | Oakville / Halton Region | Kijiji
Canadian funds, so under $300k US Funds... |
It's game over for 356s. Same way it's game over for early 911s unless you bought 5y ago!
Clones, no thanks... They don't feel like the real thing, they are body on frame like a beetle. I've been looking at 356s for the past 2-3 yrs now. Had a sight-unseen shot at a $45K one which I missed (it's a been redone by someone less risk averse than me, and is now FS at $85K). Tried to grab one with rust and in need of a roof clip from my mechanic... I broke my rules and offered more than it was worth, and that car was crap...still slipped away. Your cheapest entry is a B model but anything not falling apart is @ $40K+, and by the time you make it safe and not embarrassing it's more like $60. $80-85 if "nice" ! I talked to a seller last month, who wanted 75K "firm" for his C that had crap paint, serious body work needs, no hood handle - a porsche horn button instead as an emblem), and an awful color combo. That's when I bowed out. At those prices I'd rather drive the new Cayman S or a used Ferrari ! As a guy who owned a 65C and then a 57A (and stupidly sold them both), my problem is that they have jumped the fun/price curve! I loved my $10K 356, I enjoyed my $25K 356 - i still sold them for a reason, mind you... In a fit of nostalgia, I can see myself in a $40K 356 today... But a $60-80-100K 356 is just nuts to me.... they're not "$80K enjoyable"... I'm not even comfortable parking an 80K classic on the street... I used to tell friends "don't look at the dash and drive a 912, sounds the same", but even those are expensive now (I should know I just sold mine, for 40K !).. I need a new hobby ! |
Is there still time for an affordable 914 thread?

I missed the 356 boat, and it looks like I missed the Isetta boat as well :(
At least I got one of these before they got too stoopid http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450273384.jpg |
It's funny to look back at some of the prices. 10 years ago, there were still 356 coupes in driver condition for 20-25k on ebay. I can remember thinking, whoa, that is a LOT of money to spend when you can buy a good SC or Carrera for 9-12k.
The 356 coupe replicas are VERY tempting. I think it would be a hoot to do one one with a type 4 or even 911 engine. If I was going to build a dream 356 replica, it would have 964 c4 running gear, and use it as a winter car. Robin egg blue, black interior. Not that I've thought about it a lot. I don't mean a vw bottom with a FG body/skin done in carbon fiber but a unit/body car all the major parts of carbon fiber like an F-1 car with a drivers cell built to survive any legal speed incident maybe 50 k for a body your choice of motor extra vw P or subie depends on tooling costs vs number of units |

If you had a time machine, you could go back to 1975 and buy my '57 Speedster roller with engine and transmission for $1,500. :D
