Tundra or F150?
 

Looking for a full size truck and can't decide which one.
They are about the same price for an extra cab (not crew cab) with a V8 and in-between option package.
More bells and whistles with the Ford and better gas mileage.
Anyone done any comparisons?

Lots of F-150 engines and options. What packages and trim levels specifically are you looking at?

New or used?

Tundra is very nice but personally I could not bring myself to drive a Japanese pickup truck. Nothing more American than apple pie and pickup trucks. Happy to drive a car or SUV made anywhere in the world but a pickup...I just can't do it. YMMV.

Tundra is designed in the US and assembled in Texas. It has about the same domestic content as an F-150 and more than a Silverado.

I'm looking at 2016.
For the Toyota the TRD
Ford is the 2nd option package of 3.

I'm seeing reviews in a lot of places that choose the Tundra.
BTW I would only get the V8 in either truck.

Go drive both. Several years ago I faced the same decision and went into my test drives preferring the Toyota. I ended up with the F150. Toyota is very difficult with options, they tend to only bulk package options into big packages and restrict getting them ala-carte. For instance, at the time I couldn't get a backup camera in conjunction with the cloth front bench on any model. The Ford had more power, better MPG, better equipment, and for about $4k less money. Otherwise I found them roughly equal in quality feel and driving, they are both very nice trucks. I'm now on my second F150 and don't regret the decision.

I owned a 2007 tundra, and drive a 2010 F-150 now.

The tundra seemed quicker and more responsive and turned quick and accurately.
The ford transmission often lags, delays, doesn't respond instantly, makes the truck seem slower.
The ford handling is under-steer to the max, more like a snow-plow.

The tundra ate front tires like I go through cheeze-burgers.
The ford easily gets 70k out of a cheap set of good-years.

The ford rides nice for a truck, smooth and comfortable.
The tundra would cause your kidneys to bleed on freeways with the seams spaced just right.
I swear there were times the back of the truck was hopping so bad I struggled to talk.

I had zero mechanical problems with the tundra in three years.
In the first three years of owning the ford I had the steering wheel replaced and the driver's door window fixed. Later I had the drive-shaft removed and lubricated ($250) which is a common problem.
Visibility out the back of the ford is not good, visibility out of the back of the tundra was non-existent. A back up camera is a must. without it you just put it in reverse, close your eyes and hope for the best.



I don't know how many of these issues have been addressed or corrected since these trucks were made.

If the new tundra rides better and doesn't eat front tires and has a back up cameras, I'd probably like it better than my 2010 ford.

But the new ford with the better transmission and turbo V6 and aluminium body seems pretty darn sweet.

So without having driven either of the NEW trucks, I'd pick the Furd.

I owned a 2005 F-150 and now own a 2015 Tundra. I also rent new F-150's once a month or so.

They are both great vehicles. It really comes down to price and options. I know the owner of the local Toyota dealership so in my case it came down to price.

Either one works for me.

I do have the TRD and it drives and rides incredibly well.

I've had a Chevy, a Dodge and Ford now.

They all have + and -.

Go for the best price and let your wife pick the color. ;)

Drive a tundra and see if it doesn't ruin you for other pickups

Too funny. I'm letting my wife pick the colour or I will get any colour if the price is right and they have one on the lot.

I just drove the F150.
Meh .... is all I can say. No feel to it.
I guess it is a truck.

My 06 tundra (older design) was stellar. The 911 of pickups.

I've had a 2007 tundra 4x4, traded in for a 2010 tundra 4x4, sold it on Craigslist with 100k miles for $19,000, and now have a 2015 tundra TRD 4x4. Front pads and oil changes and gas is all they need. I pull a 14' dump trailer with my bobcat in it with no problem ever. $36,000 moderately loaded. What is the best selling truck in Japan? Is Ford allowed to have a plant there for their domestic consumption? I know Ford is big in Europe.

Gas mileage makes the Tundra an absolute NO GO! Of course, gas is next to nothing now ... but I remember filling up at $120 a tank ... how long until we get there again? The lifetime of the truck?

If you think you need a V8, look at the Chevy, it probably has the best V8 fuel economy.

Yes but the corporate profits still go overseas. It's a nice truck, just my own personal heartache that's all. The new Nissan Titan looks amazing.
