Its total BS. You cant even sell your house if you want to get away from it. I personally would foreclose before living in such an environment. I saw a story the other day that sounded to Bullshoty to be real. It said those that refused to pay for their water could be charged with child abuse if they had children. Its a cluster, no matter what. No fix in sight for years and millions of dollars.

This is another one of those situations where the politicians and bureaucrats mismanage with such outright public disregard that those affected are physically harmed. It's also another one of those situations where there will be (and currently is) a flurry of politicians and bureaucrats ducking, dodging, and pointing fingers to avoid any semblance of responsibility or association with it. People like the Governor will claim to accept "full responsibility" while not accepting/suffering any consequences. This is another one of those situations where those who made the decisions should experience criminal consequences and those who mindlessly implemented those decisions should loose their jobs. But like Cliff's location, "with all the sticking and moving," it will be hard to tell who bears responsibility.

The governor's emergency manager found a way to save some money and got off Detroit water. Still unclear how the EPA let Flint reactivate their old system using the Flint river as a source.

The EPA official has resigned, some think govenor Snyder should do the same.

In the spirit of full transparency Snyder released some emails on the topic, the one I saw had everything blacked out but the heading.

Nothing to see hete, please move along.

I think they asked Obama for a billion dollars.

Not sure why Iraq got 3 to 6 trillion and Flint could not get a tiny fraction of that, but its politics.

We are about 10 miles north of Flint. Our water comes from Lake Huron so we have not had any issues.

I have lived in this county for 17 years and Flint has had mayors that tried to do good but were always facing opposition and not much got done.

In my opinion, the leaders of the past share responsibility for the current situation. Like Detroit, it just keeps getting worse.

My wife's employer bought filters and water for any employee that lives in Flint.

As I understand it, when they switched to the Flint River they were suppose to add chemicals to help reduce the lead but it wasn't done. To me, that says that the head of the water dept. should have been the first one fired.

a good point. when public utilities aren't properly maintained you can bet someone thought about it but decided to spend the money elsewhere.

or in the case of our town didn't want to be the one in the hot seat when the issue was raised. as a member of our town utility commission I brought the issue of setting aside funding for our ancient and failing water piping up. we had to review budgets constantly and never once did I see a dime set aside for digging up old pipes and replacing them. I asked why is this? shouldn't we be budgeting for a repair that is badly needed?

crickets.

It sounds like a series of stupid errors, made worse by arrogance and inaction, growing to a huge scandal.
- Switching to Flint River for a year just because lake supply wouldn't be ready right away and Detroit was raising prices
- Not spending a small sum to add anti corrosion treatment to the river water
- Ignoring resident complaints
- Ignoring scientist and watchdog complaints
- Ignoring the companies that were switching off river water and/or aiding their own filtration
- Covering it up and trying to shift blame

The governor can't possibly survive this, nor should he. He was too closely involved, as even the redacted emails make clear.

How much damage has been done to the childrens' brains? Anyone have an informed view?

It's not just the drinking part of it. People can't bathe in it, either.

I know you were joking but it is pretty bad there.

Now,like as of today, the issue is what is happening with all of the empty plastic bottles.

Some on social media are calling for companies to donate 5 gallon water jugs instead of bottles.

With celebrities donating water and money it has become the new topic. I overheard a gal at the gas station comment that Kid Rock hasn't donated "nothin" so she "ain't buying his music any more. "

They should make the people who made the various decisions along the way, live in Flint until the issue is resolved.

Now ol' Kwame K is telling anyone who will listen that the problem was there in 2004.

I wouldn't trust that lying POS as far as I could throw him but if he is right then it goes further back and on many people.

This is what happens when two bankrupt municipalities vie for nonexistent money after being not inappropriately abandoned as failures following the great housing and manufacturing crashes.

This is also collateral damage due to the inevitability of globalism, I think. The scenario is worse than one of simple colossal malfeasance by government. It could be argued that America is being stratified like much of the third world is.

The lead corrosion issues could have been avoided for $100/day in treatment. This wasn't a ultimately a money problem. This was an incompetence and indifference problem.

+1
This was easily avoided with proper water monitoring and treatment. They screwed up big time and nobody cared.

Don't post stupid on things you obviously know nothing about. Its was a simple water treatment problem, now its much greater. It was the water treatment experts eff up, not the politicians.

Tell us more about this stratification. This is the most thought provoking lost I've read here in a very long time.
