Email advice
 

I'm seeking suggestions for reasonably-priced, hosting source for a small website with domain-based email.

Story:
I have a small personal website on a shared server with GoDaddy. With the website comes the ability to create emails through cPanel that are relatively unrestricted and use the format of [name]@PersonalDomain.com.

I just want simple POP email. Nothing more exotic than that.

Problem:
GoDaddy is trying to push everyone onto their Office365 service which costs a lot and has more features than I need. At the same time, my experience is that their cPanel-based email has become unreliable. Sometimes emails go out right away. Sometimes they take 45-60 minutes to go out. A few never seem to go out at all.

I can probably solve this by paying for a standalone server, which is overkill for my needs in this case.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably-priced, shared server host with cPanel (or similar unrestricted) email service that works well? I'm probably using 5-6 emails.

Hostgator? someone else?

If you want reliable email then you don't want shared hosting.

1&1 is pretty good.

Email can be quite reliable on a shared hosting platform if you pick a proper hosting company.

I am using Bluehost and think they are pretty good. I have been with them for a couple of years now and have not felt the urge to change providers. This coming from a guy that used to own and run a web hosting company.

I am using "namecheap.com" to register my domain. I was looking for inexpensive here.

This. The only reason I don't use 1&1 is that I've been on linode for ages and I both want to have full control and have the skills to have full control.

Bluehost is OK but their IP's get blacklisted a lot. Had a couple of clients that I moved off specifically for that reason. If your volume is low you may never notice but I don't recommend them for a business.

I set those clients up at 1&1 because their support is very good. Their new cloud products are actually really nice. They have 30 day free trials if you want to check them out.

My personal stuff is all run at linode but it is for the geekier among us.

Namecheap I use as my registrar and they have a really stellar (and free) dynamic dns service which I use for the stuff I run out of the house.

Wow. I decided to to search using Google to compare Bluehost and 1&1. Bluehost was consistently rated higher and sometimes by huge margins. I went on forums to see what web developers thought and again Bluehost was rated much higher. I was also able to find just as many complaints about blacklisting issues with Bluehost as 1&1. That's not surprising because all hosting companies that share outgoing emails servers have this problem.

After doing my research, I even more convinced that I made the right choice selecting Bluehost several years ago!

Like I said, shared hosting plans get blacklisted. No ISP is immune.

A dedicated IP should not get blacklisted. Happens with Bluehost, have never seen it with 1and1.

I don't base my buys on reviews of $2.99 a month packages or put much stock in user reviews.

As the former owner of a web hosting company I'm sure you noticed that most of the people that talk about your business are the ones who like to piss an moan.

I use Network Solutions, which does exactly what you want. Website and POP3 email.

Zero dollars and Gmail resilence... for my Linux Servers hosting apps that send email to the users

I use google Gmail as the email. I installed Postfix as gmail relay... (don't know if you use Linux too)
So my clients get emails from the servers (created by the apps) via gmail..

A dedicated IP address or dedicated server?

If the dedicated IP address is just an add-on to a shared hosting account, you are not getting a unique to you IP address for the SMTP server. Which is what you would need to avoid getting blacklisted for other people' email transgressions.

To get your own SMTP server IP address from a hosting company usually requires some type of virtual or physical dedicated server account. It is more common to get this from companies that specialize in hosting email.

A dedicated IP is a dedicated IP, that's why it's dedicated.

If it were not it would be shared.

That's the difference between dedicated and shared.

I never recommend anything other than a dedicated IP.

You don't need an ISP that specializes in email hosting.

Every major ISP offers them.

You just need to generally spend more than $2.99 a month.

Why not a small AWS server? Reliable email? Gmail offers it with your domain name. I use it for our websites.

When I checked pricing on an AWS Micro instance of Linux it would run about $15/mo and give you about half the resources of a $10/mo linode plan. And you still have to manage it all yourself.
