To the Brazilians booing our athletes:
Our athletes were concerned about mosquitoes that carry a virus. A very dangerous virus that can cause birth defects.
A valid concern for people from the US. They weren't insulting you or your country, they were concerned about the dangers of getting sick from an insect that inhabits that part of the world. But you chose to make it personal. You chose to attack these guests of your country and make them feel unwelcome, as if they had insulted your 3rd world ****-hole of a country. Instead of booing US athletes, maybe you should be spending your energy addressing the widespread corruption, crime, poverty, sewage-filled oceans and waterways, and immorality your country is known for. Oh, and I forgot the newest one: POOR sportsmanship. Boo yerself.

Humm, the only booing I've noticed has been aimed at the Russian athletes , and that related to doping allegations.
Where did you hear the audience booing US athletes? Cheers Frichard |

It's been aimed at Hope Solo of the women's US soccer team for her being vocal about Zika virus in Brazil. Booing and chanting Zika. I've not seen it at other events with US athletes, but haven't watched all.

Isn't misbehavior pretty much the norm at international soccer matches? Not a sport for spectators with delicate sensibilities.

^^ Agreed.
I found it somewhat comical to say the least, but I guess others affected by this virus would have different opinions. I get the OP thought's on this, but fans will find anything to chant to get in your head to mess with you.

I believe the Zika virus risk peaked a few months ago, so I can somewhat understand why the Brazilians would be a bit miffed if people were still making a big deal out of it. I usually find that 'scares' like this are hyped 100x by the media compared to actual risk. Its like people being afraid to go to Africa because of Ebola.

All media created events. All came and went with zero affect. Zika is the same. People panicked watch the news - ratings rise - advertising cost increases - networks make more money. Zika will belong gone in another month.

Taunting the goalie of the opposing team is pretty much standard fair in lots of sports.
You pay for your ticket and you get to cheer or boo.

And besides that, the U.S. is heavily favored to dominate the overall medal count at this Olympics; that makes us the target for booing. I mean, imagine if you're Brazilian and your country is hosting a major sporting event and then a dominant, massive team that always wins comes into town. It's like there's a new baseball expansion team and the first game is against the 1998 Yankees.

Then the whole world turns a magnifying glass upon you, to remind you that you're not good enough, not clean enough, not rich enough, not stable enough. Then, you watch some of your citizens get swept (or murdered...) out of the city into the jungle to make the touristas feel better about visiting. Yeah, the citizens of Rio are probably really enjoying themselves right now, why would they boo anyone?

Apparently, there is a lot of booing whenever Russian athletes compete, especially in the swimming events. The doping scandal and the lack of enforcement of the ban has led to loud crowd reactions when the Russians appear. This may or may not apply to Sammy's post as I haven't watched any of the Olympics.

I understand the beach volleyball crowd have been chanting "Zika, Zika" when the USA plays.
We just had a Zika related newborn death in Harris County (which likely means Houston.) The mother apparently caught it in Latin America but chances are pretty soon you won't have to go that far to catch it.

The OP seems not to be familiar with Latin America, or with Brazil. To wit:

For most Zika appears to be a handy excuse. The real reason is 'I don't need the money or the exposure.' Plus, does she not realize a mosquito can bite her arms?

The Brazilians were famous for a long time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during CART and F1 races there. They were located right across from start/finish and made so much noise most people didn't want to be anywhere near them.
