Is simple and cheap....2 10inch grade 8 bolts. Front not so easy.:(

Dueller 05-20-2016 05:22 AM

View out 27 y.o. master cylinder...first $98 expended. Money pit begins. To be continued I'm sure:(

Now chasing a electric cooling fan issue. But I did snag complete set of new polyn suspension bushings on a corvette forum at a good price!

Glad your saving that c4 from the scrap yard

I have been thinking alot about a c5 autox/hpde car lately. The performace and track parts add up quick though so Im trying to think about a reasonable budget I can stick too.

Dueller 05-20-2016 06:58 AM

I'm building this for the GRM $2016 challenge so due to EXTREMELY limted budget Contraints, I'm making a lot of compromises I would do differently if I were trying to build a competitive car for a specific class. But it is a fun exercise for chits and giggles.

So has your girlfriend lightened up yet or is she still worried the C4 will get more attention than her?

BTW I'm not into C4s but for $400, I'd have one in my garage too!

Dueller 05-21-2016 08:25 AM

Me neither, Mike. Just kinda fell into this. Yeah....::) has calmed down;)

Dueller 05-21-2016 05:56 PM

First major build crisis.... The spaghetti ma's of brake lines going into ABS system is rusted and leaking. Anybody see any problem withtotally eliminating primitive ABS and fabing old school lines and a proportioning valve?

Heel n Toe 05-22-2016 09:16 PM

I don't see why you couldn't do that... seems like that would certainly be optimum for autocrossing and track days.

However... unless someone here chimes in with some solid advice based on direct experience (fastfred? anyone?), it might be a good idea to try to ask around on some Vette website forums to find out if disconnecting the ABS-related electrical/computer stuff could cause unknown cascading problems that you don't want.

Dueller 05-23-2016 01:14 PM

Thanks for the thoughts,h&t..I may just yank every bit computer related stuff out including fuell injection,, slap manifold, a Holley and an MSD and go totally old school,;)

gt350mike 05-23-2016 04:59 PM

I agree.....nothing wrong with going old school.

Iffn I remember correctly, a guy we used to AX with ran a C-4 at streets of willow once or twice with the PCA. Don't remember his name but his initials are Steve Malmz ;)

It was a stock version with 350 hp, not a Z oh whatever.

I believe he commented on the weight and also the brakes faded badly, but other than that he had fun it it.
Nothing that couldn't be fix or compensated for.

aigel 05-24-2016 08:51 AM

Get out the $$$, this will be a $10k four hundred bucks corvette soon! Great thing is that it will be worth about 2k when you are done! :)

While I would probably pull the ABS as well, I don't think it is wise to go back to carbs from FI. I thought that engine had a pretty decent FI. At least decent enough for a heavy automatic pig! :D

LOL....I heard that. My mechanic savant agrees on f.I. he thinks we can tweak it. It's an L98 monitor... Low reving torquer...250 bhp but something like 350 ft lbs of torque at 4400 rpms.

porsche4life 05-24-2016 08:44 PM

Jim I was poking around and I can get you the brake valve you need. What thread pitch do you need on the connections?

Dueller 05-25-2016 03:36 PM

I'll check and let you know, Sid.

Alright awright awright.......

Down to nut cuttin' time.

SO FAR I HAVE MADE THE following mods:
Completely new brake system...rotors, calipers, lines including hardliners, master cylinder, etc
New shocks
All new poly suspension bushings
Steering rack and poly bushings
Bump steer kit
Balll joints new
Sway bar bushings
Plugs, plug wires
All new filters
New CAMS spec 200 treadwear tires

So there's only $255 left in challenge budget unless I sell some of pull off parts (not much of a market for clapped out c4 parts I've found:()

So what would you spend it on? Not enough to do any meaningful motor or suspension work.

Braintrust?

Damn I've got a flux capacitor Jim, only $256. Shame about your budget. ;)

Heel n Toe 05-25-2016 10:24 PM

Is it gonna be street legal? If so, there will be insurance costs, registration, and plates... that might finish up your budget.

But I'm guessing you're not gonna replace that rear glass, and that would be required to make it street legal, so...

...it's only gonna be a track and autocross toy and will be trailered to events.

I vote for the next expenditure to be for a fresh hacksaw blade so you can sever the exhaust right in front of the mufflers. And maybe a few bucks more for a coupla glasspacks just to soften the tone a bit.

BTW, used tires would've probably been okay. Heh heh.

Dueller 05-26-2016 02:41 AM

Hey Heel....you're from south carolina. I thought like Mississippi even farm tractors are street legal in SC.;)

All license, registration, ins etc is exclude from budget.

But FWIW the lifetime antique tag was $30. Got it insure as a recreational classic driven less than 5000mi per year for "shows, car events, rallys". That runs about 175$ a year. This ain't no trailer queen baby.

The irony is strong

I can pick one up used for 75-125$. But I have some other plans.;)

tevake 05-28-2016 01:16 PM

Ah ha, a little pickup bed to carry your track tires to and from the track.

Shhhhhh....how did ya know?

porsche4life 05-28-2016 02:09 PM

I was thinking some southern ingenuity was in order with aluminum angle and plexiglass...

gt350mike 05-28-2016 07:24 PM

Perhaps more fiberglass?

Not my first choice for an AN AX car, but the end item should prove interesting. Most guys won't build an all out AX racecar.

I you can get it under 2000lbs , you'll stand a chance against the Miatas:D

Not mine either...lol

If I get it under 3,000 lbs I stand a chance to get it on the trailer:D

Made major progress this weekend! Motivating under its own power and actually stops with our old school braking system with a NASCAR style cockpit adjustable proportioning valve (wilwood no less ;)) so we can do victory donuts...lol. I've gutted about 250 lbs... Possibly more

Although running fine and gobs of torque by getting rid of the TPI injection and going with a carb, a mild cam and headers we can increase to about 75 more RWHP. MIGHT LOSE A LITTLE TORQUE IN THE PROCESS. Someone said Horsepower is how FAST you hit something....Torque is how far you drag it.

I'll update with pics shortly.

J P Stein 06-28-2016 07:40 AM

In my experience, WEIGHT (or lack there of) is the most important feature of an AX car.
My 1700 lb 914 waxed all but one local AX Miata (DP national champ) up in The Seattle area. Not bad for a 205 hp 2.7L.

The small size of the Miatas is also a large factor. HP is important when OTG, but weight works all the time.

turbo2.0 06-28-2016 07:48 AM

If you want to go fast, add lightness.

Said some British guy who built flimsy cars.....

J P Stein 06-28-2016 08:24 AM

Step out side the box.......
You don't need any glass on the car.
