Over the past four days, I've been called a scheister, a good dad, a shameless, spineless individual, an opportunist, and a bad example to my kids. While I have my 15 minutes of
fame, I will take the opportunity to tell everyone my story. We've been making emblems since the 1890's, back when Spaniards roamed the country, and up until last Saturday when a
huge fire consumed both our home and livelihood. I walked out of the blaze with nothing but the clothes on my back, and 2,000 pesos in my wallet. I lost my dog that night, my loyal
companion for 6 years.
.
.
For every 100 guys that are genuinely helpful, there will always be that one nay-sayer. "Scammer!" shouts one guy. Why help someone who collects sports cars, for crying out loud?
The truth is, I set aside some money for my kids early on. This I did before I splurged on my passion -- cars. Trust fund for my eldest, a nice condo unit along Macapagal, and some
money in the bank. I am financially informed, and I could, if I wanted to, just pack up and leave with what I have put aside for myself, and abandon the 120 guys that depend on us. But
no. I will not do that. My father will not do that. None of us will. I have a million pesos in donations, and a little more from my own stash. Proceeds from the sale of my cars will likewise go to the rebuild effort.
.
.
I am already at 1/3 of my target, and with your help, can collect the full $50,000 needed to rehabilitate some of our machines and try to operate the company on limp mode. An opportunist, you
say? This is our opportunity to shut down a business that hasn't made us any real money in years. I'm 38 years old, able-bodied despite being blind in one eye, married to a wonderful
wife who's equally qualified to work, and have very little reason to pour my life's savings back into a company that has struggled to survive since before my time. It costs far less money
to shut a business down than to restart one. To close, I only hope that should a fate such as mine befall you, good guys like Angie Mead King, Marc Soong, and the Top Gear crew will
be there to help you out. I am now poor, but have never been richer in terms of friends

Makes this seem like a forgone conclusion.

I have not read the whole thread but in all honesty while I have empathy for your situation I'd be highly reluctant to donate to something even the recipient does not believe in.

Why should I care more about them than you?

You feel you have an obligation to those 120 staff which is admirable and speaks highly of you but at the end of the day you don't believe in the business.

Leave your emotions at the door.

You had a struggling low profit business before the fire and now expect to run it in limp mode?

That's not a workable business case.

Those 120 people are going to be out of a job, the question is not if, it's when.

If it's your intent to keep revenue flowing until they find other work great, good on you. You are what we call a mensch.

But if you think this is a viable long term solution then you are kidding yourself.

You might be better off taking the donated funds and splitting it up as severance for them and move on with your life.

You seem like a good guy, your heart is in the right place, but that does not mean it's the right thing to do.

For you or anyone else.

In all sincerity I wish you the best.

Anyone know any of these guys? Would be cool if they were right here on Pelican!

He had the car shipped to Philippines.

Some of his other posts from later on are consistent with not being stateside.

Still, does not answer the other questions.

Not entirely convinced he's a scammer.

Think he's just prone to poor decision making and needs a reality check.

Well, did anyone else read the OP's last post that he has since deleted? I wish I had quoted it so it would have been preserved.

In summary, he posted that he now has enough money that he is going to purchase another 911. It was up to the readers of this thread to determine if he was mocking the critics on the board, and he concluded by thanking all for sending all the "clicks" to his funding page.

I saw that, and I think he was being snarky due to all the "scammer!" accusations that have been flung at him.

Oh, I agree. Just a douche move, IMO, and was a bit surprised that he deleted it. A real troll move.

I'm on the fence if his situation is real. I originally thought it was. However, a lot of valid points were brought up by the Pelicanites. My observation was he had an awful lot of time to respond to an internet site 5 times a day while rebuilding his business?

Curiosity got the best of me - so I went over and looked at his FB page. I think he is taking advantage of the situation. Even mentions on FB, the business never really made them any money? He posted that he was even resorting to selling a condo unit that had been bought as a long term investment. Guess the Porsche isn't still a consideration....

Maybe it's a foreign (Phillipine's) thing, to keep asking to fund him after most here have expressed how they feel of this situation. It sounds like I have had far less success than you, and less money over my life, and far more life changing occurances (see post 39 earlier in this thread), and it just baffles me why you would still be asking for help.

I would never consider asking for, or accepting volunteered help from online aquaintences, or family for that matter. I believe it is in poor taste to make us uncomfortable/feel guilty for being the benefactors of better decision making than yourself, and not sharing the wealth (or lack thereof).

Real or not, one thing for sure is he has lied and/or been deceptive.

He's gone from "I'm poor, and have nothing but the clothes on my back and 2,000 pesos in my wallet," to "I am very financially secure and savvy, have a luxury condo, trust fund for my kids, a Porsche 911." From "I had no insurance" to "I have insurance but it doesn't cover everything" etc. A lot of deception.

So, yeah, that alone makes it a scam.
