Internet Speed issue
 

At my house yesterday, I swapped out my 4 x 4 DOCSIS 3.0 modem for a 28 x 8. When I tested with my PC direct to cable modem, I was able to get 127Mbps down with 12Mbps up. When I put the router into place, the speed drops to 40Mbp, with still 12Mbps up. Tests were do hardwire LAN to one of the 4 ports.

My router is a NETGEAR FVS336Gv2. It is dual WAN, but I'm only using one port.

LAN to WAN throughput is 350MBps - guessing this is with both WAN ports

It is dual IP4 and IP6, but the IP6 is not active. I have an active gateway to gateway VPN.

Any thoughts?

My work is rated at 50/10 but I'm getting similar results to the house with the exact same equipment. So I do believe it is the router...

How are the ports configured?

Pretty much everything these days should default to 1,000 full duplex but may want to check anyway.

Either log into the back end or check ports link indicator lights.

Commonly

Left green = 10

Right green = 100

Both green = 1000

On the router, the WAN port and the LAN ports are both sides green (both are 1GB).

On my switch, out of 16 ports, 2 are 100Mbps, the rest are 1Gbps.

LAN to WAN throughput for FVS336Gv2 is 60 mbps total. So accounting for overhead etc.. 40 would be about right.

The FVS336Gv3 is 350.

That router just isn't powerful enough.

Figure a little bit of overhead in real life vs. theoretical numbers and that explains your 40.

What's your primary need?

Is VPN support critical or just a nice bonus?

VPN will slow things down.

I use the VPN to allow work from home to office without software. Also, the NAS in the office will backup itself to the NAS at the house.

Also, it allows me access to the network drives from my phone and tablets.

Encryption is what kills you on VPN.

It requires horsepower.

In it's class the FVS336Gv3 offers the fastest theoretical throughput so it's a good choice but the cons are it's not as feature rich as other offerings in its class. EDIT: VPN throughput is just shy of 80 theoretical. You might see 60, ish.

If you have a relatively new PC hanging around that you can dedicate to the task you might be better served by going with pfsense.

You can get up to 100mbps with a 1ghz CPU, more if you go with a better spec box and PCI-e NIC.

The upload speeds on either network are limited by Comcast/Xfinity to 12Mbps, so that is the theoretical maximum anyway under VPN. We're only allowed ONE upstream channel. Since I have 2 WAN ports, I thought about bonding 2 services together. But I looked at the cost of 2 services vs. going with a higher speed plan and the costs matched. Farging ice-hole Bas-ta-ges....

I'm trying to improve the non-VPN internet speeds, since that is where we do most of our access.

I expect that moving to the V3 units along with selling my V2 units will solve the issue for a net cost of $150.

Netgear has another VPN router that has a theoretical throughput around 900Mbps LAN to WAN. Unless I move to a fiber service or to the 2Gbps Comcast plan (yes, they have one here) it is overkill. And about double the cost.

SRX5308-100NAS

It looks like the FVS318G-200NAS is really what I need and can be had for as little as $35 used. But the last thing I need is to learn a new appliance or software package. Need to be dedicated to the Solar business and consulting.
