Met a 500,000 mile 912 this weekend
We joined some friends for a fun weekend drive and spent the night at the Schweitzer resort in Idaho. The 912 pictured below was owned by this mans father and together they are over 500k on this car. It's on its 3rd motor and is absolutely stunning. The first engine went over 250k. The current one is fresh. He drove the thing like he stole it heading up the mountain to the resort. I love it when folks bring valuable cars out and use them. We had a few nice 356's and some older 911's on the drive as well. Beautiful views coming down the mountain yesterday!

Nice. Without rust or collisions taking them out, older Porsches could probably go forever w the drivetrains serviced/rebuilt when needed.
I'm glad you're enjoying the summer, Jerry. ![]()

My old '67 912 had more than 300K on it and three rebuilds but that was when there was a good supply of oversize crank main bearings. John Benton (the 912 motor guru) told me that out of round crank cases were what killed most 912 motors once the supply of OS bearings dried up. As I recall he was stashing the oval cases for when it became economical to line bore them and fit new bearings. Heads cracked between the exhaust valve and spark plug but that was easily fixed. I loved the 912.

Jerry - Looks like a great event at a beautiful setting. Was it a local PCA thing?
My 912 impression: Bought a rust bucket coupe after I sold my XKE in the late '80's. Got a new pan welded in. Took it down to bare metal and painted it myself. Drove it for a month and sold it. Was disappointed in the power and always felt you should be able to put the top down in any sports car. Bought my 73.5 in 1990 and hope to have it many more years. YMMV

My '72 911 hot rod now has over 1/2 million miles on the tub. I've put half of those on it myself, averaging well over 20,000 miles per year. I'm on my fourth motor, but those are more "iterations" than required replacements. Second tranny rebuild, but I'm twisting that poor 915 pretty hard with my last three 3.0's. Several suspension and brake replacements in the name of "upgrades" in the search for better performance. It has now reached its first "44 year maintenance" schedule, in that it is in for rust repair and paint. These cars are well and truly as "indestructible" as mankind can make them, and very much made to be driven. It saddens me very deeply to see the unrealistic values assigned to these by collectors who will never truly enjoy them - the unrealistic values that have effectively taken most of them off the road. What a shame.

Bob, it was a local PCA thing. The club here is pretty good. This is the first non DE thing I've been involved in. We had a few 356's show up, this lovely 912, a few early 911's. The rest were 996 generation or newer 911, Boxster and Caymans. We have some very knowledgeable folks here. Jeff probably knows Dr. Tom who used to drive a pale blue 72 911 at DE's in Seattle regularly. He now has a GT3 he beats the crap out of.
Jeff, I hear ya. We've seen many 356 and early 911 race cars come off of the track in vintage racing as the owners can no longer justify risking them if they don't have deep pockets. Case in point, one of our SOVREN members wrecked his Ford GT40 last year, a race car he regularly drove to the track. I hope we see it back out after it is repaired. I have a 72 911 project that I don't know what to do with. Bob has seen the car. Divorce, move and my laziness have left it lingering. My plan 10 years ago was track rat as its original engine is long gone. Still, I'm not sure I'd put a bunch of $'s into it and use it in anger. I have a 914 or 996 for that :-)
