"Fearing for their lives"

It's become kind of a catch-all excuse for shooting people.

Well, that and "reached for my gun."

This seems an especially awful example of over-reaction: father in stopped vehicle with hands up. 18 shots fired.

Haven't clicked the link, but under very stressful situations once you start shooting you often keep shooting until the slide locks back. Neither defending nor attacking, just trying to bring a little perspective to the Monday morning quarterbacking.

Both of the people I know who were involved with self defense in the home situations emptied their guns - one a revolver and one a Browning Hi Power. The guy with the Hi Power said "It wasn't until the slide locked and I reached for a reload did I realize he was down". Revolver guy admitted to dropping the hammer on 2 or 3 spent cylinders before he realized it was all over.

a hard fact of life when you're paid to carry a gun is that you need to be BETTER THAN THAT! I am not unsympathetic to the danger police face every day but we have waaaay too many quick draw mcgraws out there. psych profiles need to be improved perhaps. I don't believe being a cop means you get to do whatever it takes to preserve your own life. it means you have a duty to do whatever it takes to preserve the lives you come in contact with.

unless your perp is a known child molester/kidnapper, then you have my full endorsement for flat out murder and I promise to do my best to get on any jury you might face so I can carry the torch for letting you go free.

now before you guys pin a democrat merit badge on my lapel I need to be honest with you and let you know I believe Barry O' has done more than any single person in this country to worsen this situation and put what are clearly unfit officers on edge.

When cops say their #1 objective is to survive the day.....sadly it reminds me of black lives matter.

Both factions saying one life more important than the other.

That in a nutshell is the problem.

Get rid of the bias and treasure ALL lives.....

You partially redeemed youself. We now have an atmosphere in this country where cops have the feeling that it is open season on them. To preserve their lives they are going to be quicker on the trigger. It is going to get a lot worse. .

Kind of like minorities have felt for a very long time now?

One of the things I have been taught in my self-defense classes is that in order for a self-defense shooting to be legal, the person threatening death or great bodily harm (and threats do not need to be verbal, just perceived) must have the ability to actually cause death or great bodily harm. I doubt the 6-year old had any such ability, therefore the shooting is most likely criminal.

One officer retired after pleading guilty to tampering.

Which means he will get pay and medical benefits for the rest of his life, and will probably take another position as a cop somewhere else.

That story is terrible. How many people went to jail in the past in situations like this before dashcams came into play?

This is no excuse for their behavior, but I wonder if the cops had some background info on the victim that made them feel like he deserved a beat down. Just crazy.

"under very stressful situations once you start shooting you often keep shooting until the slide locks back " is a bullsh** excuse. Cops are professionals and receive copious amounts of training (allegedly).

That excuse may fly for a homeowner who does not have to qualify regularly, or go into high stress simulation training - but for a cop, that is bull.

In that example what happened is the kid was a passenger in his dads car.

Dad got pulled over.

Cops opened fire on dad an ended up killing the kid.

In the deal with the dead kid, how do they not see someone in the front seat, next to the guy they are trying to shoot?

That was my take on it as well

When I was in school, I was driving in inclement weather near Lake Tahoe, around 0900 on a Saturday. Came around a corner and there was a full size blazer sideways, sliding toward me in my lane. I got onto the shoulder as far as I could without going over the side, honking and flipping the bird at the guy, who turned out to be a Nevada State Trooper. He whipped a u turn, and came roaring behind me, parked on the shoulder. He went off on me, telling me he had never been flipped off, and he was a cop in the 60's. He asked if I had been drinking, "It is 9:00 in the morning, of course not." Do you do drugs? You look like you do drugs. He proceeds to look up my nose. It is starting to snow, so I ask if I can get my jacket, "No, you'll live." He was berating me for about 10 minutes before he started to settle down, ticketed me for something, and stormed off.

I am absolutely certain he would have beat the crap out of me and arrested me for resisting if there were not 4 other people with me, rather than push me around and yell at me. I filed a complaint against him, and included letters from the 4 other medical students that were with me. Ticket got dismissed, he got a letter of reprimand and suspension without pay for a week. If I had been alone, it would have completely changed my life. Would have been in prison for a while, never finished school and no way I could have gotten a license to practice.

Thank goodness that sort of thing only happens to minorities. I, and my 4 friends, must have dreamed the entire episode.

The few cops that I know all act extremely entitled, want free stuff, and think that they should be exempt from a strict adherence to the law. In other words, they think that the ARE the law.

Having said that, I appreciate honest police officers and give charitably to police, fire, EMT, and military.

Wait, a black cop shot a white kid and no one is burning down their hood?

I might be mistaken but I believe there is a back story to this where one of the officers had a personal issue with the driver (Father)..... very ugly story.....

But my initial point was that IMO lethal force is used too quickly - often as a 'first resort.'
