Now, it's about to be under water thanks to climate change. Oh yeah, it's also about 150 degrees there and filled w rednecks who constantly get in the news for bizarre crimes. Great place.
Denis is this really how you want to talk about someone's home state? What a sweeping and unflattering generality.

There certianly are some strange news stories that come out of Fla. and it is hard not to laugh at the absurdity of some of them.
But I wonder if you have ever been there. You clearly have strong opinions of the place, are they based only on the news stories?

I did a trip this summer with my Brother from the Keys up to the pan handle. Mostly on the west coast. Met many very nice folks ( southern hospitality is real ).
And saw an interesting range of country, from the amazing Everglades, to some nice rolling hills with old growth live oaks covered with Spanish moss. Saw miles of totally indeveloped coast, some nice Old Fla towns seemingly unchanged in years.

It was a nice eye opening trip. Saw many areas that have escaped the growth the has so impacted parts of the east coast.

It's great that you have found a place that suits you so well. City's are a good fit for the aggressive belligerent types.

Califorina is a wonderful varied state, but does have its share of problems too.

Say an earth quake comes along and causes major damage in one of the nuclear power plants causing big contaminating leaks (heaven forbid )
Would that mean tha everyone in the area is a hopeless looser for living there?

Or some big problem occurs in the water supply system draining the surrounding states to supply the masses in so cal. Would that mean that the parched folks in those cities are all fools and looser for living there.

Maybe a little compassion for others dealing with a big problem would be appropriate.

Baz, Bell, ury914, and our own racing BVD. Just a few of our fellow Pelicans that call Fla. home.
Cheers Richard

I'll take the beaches on the Emerald Coast of FL over anything I've seen in SoCal, or for that matter anything I've seen in Mexico and the Bahamas.

As a NATIVE CALIFORNIAN....currently residing in Florida I will say that BOTH states have their share of beauty and some ugliness as well.

Most of the ugliness is found in the humans (of BOTH states)...not the geography.

I will say that Florida in the wintertime.......is almost paradise, climate-wise.

One more thought....it seems like most of the butt holes in both CA and FL come from some other state......just an observation.

I have been to Fla., (once almost 40 years ago), and I obviously dislike it pretty intensely though you are right, I should temper my remarks in light of potential hurt feelings from people who live there.

My response was to someone who made a remark equating it w SoCal, they could not be further from one another in appeal, IMO. I'd actually rather live in Kansas, Matt's home state, than Fla. any day of the week. Kansas is not a bad place, just sort of boring. There are far worse places to be in the USA.

If I strike you as aggressive and belligerent because of my remarks, I apologize. To me, it's just the Internet and it's normal for people to express strong opinions on these threads. Sometimes I don't think enough about someone becoming offended, I should.

FWIW, Los Angeles and CA. in general have plenty of problems but they are mostly related to too many people wanting to live there. I'm house hunting in the Midwest and plan on spending more time w family in MN. and WI. in the coming years though I'm not moving from CA. completely. My close friends and working life are all in CA.

A massive earthquake, (w/o the nuclear reactor scenario), would actually be great for CA as long as people don't die, (very few have in any CA. EQ in last 100 years). A quake that sends people scurrying elsewhere leaving a trail of piss would relieve some population pressure there. There is no hope, though. Half the people in the world want to come to the U.S. and they all want to come to CA.

My 2 pesos: I spent more than a decade living and working on FL's Space Coast. I never, for a second, considered returning to FL for retirement. Many people are happy to call FL, just not me. YMMV

Thanks Denis for the surprising conciliatory reply . I was expecting to be ducking virtual ninja stars for some time.

I hear what you are saying about the potential benefits of a big disaster thinning things out a bit.
Many on Kauai now see the effects of Iniki as having really slowed the growth and keeping it from what is happening on the other Islands, a plus.

As you may Know I'm in the process of relocating to the mainland, and am looking for an attractive area to settle in. With the mild weather and nice coast, nearby mountains etc, So Cal would be on my list, minus a few dozen million people in the area, And high cost of living/ taxes.

Seems like your Trailer may serve you well in wanting to hang with family around the mid west. Is your restoration going forward? It could be a really nice rig for going visiting.

In regards to the manor of expressing ourselves on the Internet, this was my first venture into an online community and the civility and positive interaction usually found here was a big part of my joining in.
That civility is more frequently strained in resent years as the habits of other online use spill over into our community. Hence the creation of PARF.

We have lost some valued members, that are missed. Could this be part of why?

Thanks again for your kind reply.

Cheers Richard

It doesn't sound like anyone, including the EPA, is unduly concerned. But as with everything these days, the story will be sensationalized and politicized. It does contain that trigger word 'radioactive' after all A more informative article on the situation is in the Tampa Bay Times. The fertilizer by-product has only low-levels of radioactivity and was a small part of the overall volume of waste water which is mainly just acidic water. The spill is contained and has not gone beyond the Mosaic property. The plant is operating as normal.

I live in Orlando and love it. Love old Florida cities like st Augustine) love the beaches, Miami, Tampa, Gainesville (go Gators), love the Keys, love the no income tax and cost of living and the great winters. There is plenty I dislike too, but I love it here. Growing up outside Chicago, I can't move back anywhere really cold, ever. Even great cities like Chicago, New York or Minneapolis are off the table for my family to consider as it is just too cold for us. So that leaves warmish places. Parts of LA are on that list, as is San Diego, Phoenix, Denver and several others. I think you can find a neighborhood that fits your lifestyle in many different places, always with tradeoffs though.

Someone on here posted that since temps have been recorded, the coastal areas of Florida have never recorded a 100 degree day. The Gulf coast is fantastic...esp from Sarasota south.

Love both states. Would gladly live in either state. California certainly wins for variety of climates and geography but florida has its own special something. Love the keys and sport fishing and stunning display of wildlife

Not sure how you can visit a state once 40 years ago and come to such a conclusion

I don't think there's a state in the union without stunning beauty almost everywhere, if you keep an open mind. Damned humans though are determined to muck things up, regardless.

I appreciate each state's own diversity.

On my bucket list...tour of the entire country. Not sure what I'll be driving yet but have time to figure it out. The Airstream method would be very cool.....

Indeed Baz not a bad way to see the country.
Airstream makes a nice Merc sprinter based camper.

Traveling in a camper van is much more low key in your presents than a larger motorhome, especially with car in tow.
Much easier to park at those surf spots along the way too!

Cheers Richard

Those sprinters are dear tho. Baz.

I can't seem to get a pic to load. But you have seen pics of my 345 classic with SC in tow. That whole rig cost me quite a bit less that even a well used Sprinter.
So there is that to consider.

Cheers Richard

Certainly not slamming FLA, wow I'd love to go there especially after having read every novel by James W Hall. I feel I know my way around already LOL.

But Baz, you OK? Three surfers in Florida are attacked by sharks within just two hours at popular beach | Daily Mail Online That's your home break isn't it?
