New Old Radio!

This one has been on my bucket list of radios for as long as I've been collecting. It's a 1940 Zenith 12-S-471. It's one of the last classic Zenith consoles before the war years came and everything changed!

Let me know what tubes it takes. I scored a large batch of old stuff recently, and may have some that'll work in it. You're welcome to come take a look next time you're nearer Seattle.

Edit.. looks like these... I know I didn't get any 6v6gt but I think I have some others.

V1 6K7G RF amplifier
V2 6A8G Mixer
V3 6J5G Oscillator
V4 6K7G IF amplifier
V5 6J5G Detector
V6 6J5G First audio amplifier
V7 6F8G Inverter
V8 6V6GT Audio amplifier
V9 6V6GT Audio amplifier
V10 6U5 Magic eye tuning indicator
V11 6X5 Rectifier
V12 6X5 Rectifier

I'll take a look at my Nordmende Carmen schematic to see if it could use any of your tubes.

Thanks Wolfe! I'm good on tubes except for the 6f8 Inverter. I'll make a video and post it to YouTube tomorrow.

That is amazing!!

I've been converting old philco cabinets with modern electronics for years, love the old at deco style radios :)

I'll take a peek and see if I have any. A lot of them no longer have easily readable markings though...and I'm not sure how to positively ID on appearance.

Let me know. If they don't' belong in guitar amps, I can part with a few. I still haven't cataloged and valued any of them, although I know there's a few I have that are worth a bunch.
I even have some NOS AM radio military transmitting tubes I scored in that bunch.

Ayles 09-26-2016 07:30 PM

I have a box full of tubes and an old tube tester(probably garbage). Already went through the box and none of them work with my amp or pre for home audio. Whats the next best way to see if they are good for anything or have value?

I was looking into build an amp a few years ago and then got my 911 instead... So project time and skill set has kind of stalled any amp building.

Would those be "valves"? ;)

No way really, I've found that you can fog the glass like a mirror and often times it will be readable. I highly doubt that Normende radio will use any American tubes. The Germans made things a little "different" shall we say. Nice radiof, but a different beast from the American stuff.

You can find tube data sheets easily online. To get a ROM value for them, Tubesandmore.com is a website that has a pretty good selection of tubes available. They are a little proud of their stuff, but at least you'll know if you have anything that's substantially valuable.

Sorry it took me a little longer than I said. I was busy going to Megadeth last night!

Not surprising that you have been hunting that beauty. Absolutely one of the finest radio cabinets I've seen, and it works too.

Great find!

Cheers Richard
