Started reading the paper at age 12.

Was a liberal in college.

Listened to NPR all my life - still even. Not so much their news.

Grew very conservative after college.

Watched CNN in when it debuted. Loved the 24hr coveraage.
Loved Fox when it came out.

6 months ago I turned off - NO MORE BROADCAST NEWS.

I'm much happier!

^ yup.

Stopped watching "news" a long time ago. Decided there was basically nothing I could personally do about any of the stupidity going on and getting reports of it just ruined my attitude and raised my blood pressure.

If you were to edit down the local news broadcast there is only a couple of minutes of actual news. Everything else is either commercials, banter, or the newscasters telling what the news is going to be about when they actually get around to telling you about it.

And who the heck thought it was a good idea to have a commercial for the news during the news broadcast. That's enough to make me turn it off and go do anything besides watching the news.

Heck, can't stay awake until the commercial breaks are over to actually watch any broadcast content let alone the news anyway.
I have CPMS, Commercials Put Me to Sleep.

Hehe. I remember from an old episode of Sha-Na-Na, they actually parodied treating natural causes!

As some of the laws and regulations that we must live by are enacted to protect us from the dumbest among us, so it seems that our televised programming is intended to entertain, and mentally occupy the same demographic.

That's why I gave up my satellite service.

Remember when they did a series based on Airplane and Naked Gun called Police Squad. The only did a few episodes and killed it because they thought it was over people's head and took too much attention to watch.

I remember that. Anything that involved the Zucker bros. is absolute gold!

I've said for years that the news media are whores that will sensationalize anything to bump the ratings. Yes, the shooting was a tragedy. No, we don't have to drone on about it for days. And (already pointed out) for the love of God, please stop calling everything "breaking news" when it is older than yesterday's leftovers.

I generally wait for whatever to read it in the newspaper. Usually, by the time it hits printed page on a local 20,000 circulation newspaper, the fluff, and estimations have been removed, and it is just fact, and knowledge.

I don't get news alerts on my phone, or follow social media, or watch cable/network news, it seems like they all have liberal leaning and won't report what hurts their cause.

Most times, if something is truly important, my wife will tell me about it, or my parents will say something.

As a pet project I have been toggling between CNN and FOX for the last couple of months to see what they are choosing to present to the viewers. This is very much in line with the now "parf"ed thread about two realities. As if it were any surprise, the bias is ridiculous, and we truly live in a world where we can pick our kool-aid and drink whatever flavor we want.

(agreed on all the "breaking news..ALERT..."type sensationalism as well!)

Random toggles:

This isn't to parf up this thread. I truly believe in the 21st century, we as a society are inundated with a level of information and bias unprecedented in human history. If I were king of the world, "critical thinking" would be a class right up there with reading, writing, math, etc... I could certainly use a refresher!:D

edit- My wife, looking over my shoulder as I was typing this, sent me a link to one of her favorite podcast, which had some opinions on the subjest: https://www.thebritishhistorypodcast.com/my-book-report-on-zees-phd

My work day starts in the afternoon goes into evening. So my 'free' time is in the morning. Consequently, I do watch a fair amount of daytime TV - which is terrible. Nothing but awful news events, court TV drama, Dr Phil family dysfunction & more. I've recently discovered all this is starting to really affect my mood and disposition in a negative way.

I've chosen to avoid most of that and read something worthwhile and/or listen to music.........

Deschodt 10-20-2016 08:34 AM

Totally agree with you guys, it's affecting my mood sometimes too...
And I've found out long ago that invariably, when I know a particular topic in depth and see it reported on in the media, they get it wrong EVERYTIME. Makes me doubt the rest of the coverage..

Yep.

And the strangest part is West Nile virus has killed 199 people in the USA in 2015. It is in virtually every state and life goes on. A few people get Zika and the governments go freakin nuts and beg for millions of tax dollars. Only one person has died in Utah from Zika and they are spraying like crazy in Miami, Florida. What? The media covers Zika and ignores West Nile?

I haven't had cable for over 2 years and I don't miss talking heads of CNN, MSN, Fox and all of the rest because all of it is just talk. It is entertainment and entertainment I don't need.

I watch the local news for sports and weather -

I read newspapers:
WSJ
New York Times
Washington Post

I cherry pick what is important to me.

cairns 10-20-2016 10:50 AM

Haven't watched it in years and cut the cable cord too. Quit the local WaPo years ago (consumed by bias, everything is politics, no real content, even the guy who reviews cars is a liberal idiot who made a fool of himself reporting on a local DE- he went 150MPH in a Porsche Turbo with a V8 in the back!!). Myopic morons IMO.

I do get the WSJ now and love it. Very little politics, tons of news you can actually use and they keep their opinions on the op-ed pages. Their car guy actually writes very well IMO. When I want other news I go online, start with Real Clear World and will read every thing from Der Spiegel to the Bangkok Post to the Daily Mail depending on how much time I have. Not to mention Pelican Parts and Rennlist.

If the MSM is biased that's OK- but when they collude with one party or another (and it's usually the left let's face it) and present that as fact that's over the top- I don't trust anything they say. I quit the Post when they ran thousands of words on Obama's "faith" and included not one about a certain reverend whose church he attended for decades. Pure bunk- and you expect me to pay for that?

The distrust with me started years ago....60 Minutes on Audi's "sudden acceleration". I truly believe the MSM would ruin our country to make a buck and promote their agenda and am amazed at how many people form their opinions based on watching or reading nothing but that.

If the Hillary leaks have shown anything, it is that the majority of national news is scripted first by the government before it hits the air or print. Every day the White House generates the script for the base section of the lead stories to be emphasized. Don't believe me? Do some homework on the topic and you'll find it. Some of the smaller regional areas of the country are so lazy they don't even bother to change the wording.

Cajundaddy 10-21-2016 08:26 PM

I dumped TV news and talk radio 10 years ago due to the insufferable urgency of every rain event or car chase. Newspaper has since made itself obsolete by abandoning actual reporters and just regurgitating whatever is available from their affiliate or on AP. I occasionally check BBC world news to keep up on current events, picking and choosing only the stories that interest me.

"If it bleeds it leads" and tabloid reporting has made most mainstream news outlets useless and an unnecessary waste of time.

shbop 10-22-2016 05:37 AM

Television news? There is no more television news. We are bathed in propaganda, not news.

911SauCy 10-24-2016 10:01 AM

People still watch the news...?
