Anyone Tai Chi here?
The wifey wants us to do things together and she chose a Tai Chi class.
Anyone doing this and enjoying it? I guess I can see the benefits of the stretching and possible helping with the tendinitis in my wrists, but we were the only ones in the class that didn't have one foot in the grave.

Slow motion martial arts, it works to a point.
Like most martial arts it works with repetition and long term commitment, things that the average north american is not very good at. ![]() I do karate, the amount of student churn is incredible, I've seen grown men that can't handle a 15-20minute light warm-up and stretch. We take it pretty easy on newbies, all the time saying to "just do your best and don't over do it". Last week I had a guy 30 something, smoked, but didn't look in that bad of shape. He didn't get 30 minutes into a 60 minute introductory class before he bailed. I'm pretty sure he was crying....

My wife talked me into it several years ago, talking classes with her - something to do together.
I forget how long the classes were and for how many weeks, but it just was not for me. Boring. I have no interest in Pilates or Yoga either. I need to be more active than that.

Not to be harsh, but I think a lot of this stuff is so people can convince themselves they are exercising.
Maybe if this was just another 10 session course to appease the misses, but the instructors are talking life commitment here! lol

Try Kraf Magor. KM is a great skill to acquire and as a self-defence technique it may one day save you from an attacker, even one armed with a knife.

Tai Chi and Krav Maga are two very different things. That's kind of like someone asking if they should try doing "sit and be fit" (exercise show for the old and decrepit where you exercise while seated) and being told that they should instead take up MMA or kickboxing. Bet yes, based on the little that I know about it, it's probably a very effective skill and one that seems like it could be pretty harsh to learn as well.

I giggle at anyone who says there system is the best, to me the best is the amount of commitment you place on your style and what works best for you. You could say I major in my my style and minor in several other styles, I do this to know how to defend myself against other styles. But my commitment is to my style, I want anything I do to come out automatically...no mind.

The English version of the name depends how you write the Ivrit word. Unlike some other disciplines the aim is to down your opponents very quickly indeed. It is not a competitive sport as such, the moves can be learned quite quickly but obviously the skill level improves with much training.

I looked into Krav Maga and Kick boxing...
But I'm 59 and out of shape I knew I wouldn't make it. So I'm looking at a Tai Chi... also WAY less expensive the KM and KB. And yeah, comparing Krav Maga to Tai Chi is like comparing a Toyota Corolla to a Turbo Porsche ![]()

Tai Chi is a serious martial art... all you have to do is speed it up, which is called t'ai chi ch'uan.
Pushing hands is a bunkai I practice often. "Go around kicking butt" would a lack of understanding of the martial arts. ![]()

Lap swimming and any other activity which gets your body moving and pumping blood.
Once your testosterone levels rise and your waist size goes down you will have many other options.

If by that ^, you mean, could learning Tai Chi teach you to fight, then yes, Tai Chi as most folks usually see it is derived from a viable martial art.

![]() However as Mark says I have seen it used as a martial art... and anything that gets you up, moving, and stronger... will help you defend yourself. Quote:
However I cannot think of anything more boring than 'swimming laps', sorry, BTDT. And then there is the whole hygiene thing of swimming in a public pool ![]() I think I will stick to ridding my bike.
