Work ?????

rusnak 02-03-2017 01:39 PM

Given that I work maybe 80+ hrs a week, I guess I pay myself to talk to you guys now and then.

I work at work, or I am preparing for my next project. I may check for business calls or emails, but if I am actually doing my job, I won't stop to take a call. I never surf or screw around, and yes, my boss is really hard on me. Sometimes I wish I wasn't self employed.

As an engineer with unlimited web access, I would cruise the internet, email, and make personal phone calls while at work, but I never allowed it to interfere with meeting my commitments or holding up my end on a project. There were occasionally slow times in between projects where I would spend the majority of my day on personal stuff. That didn't happen often, and I didn't like it. Much easier to be busy than trying to look busy.

I had a newly-hired engineer sitting in the next cube that totally ignored his work and just surfed the 'net on golfing sites all day. He lasted about two months before they showed him the door. The guy who replaced him got cell phone calls from his wife about 20 times a day. When he was complaining to me about it one day, I told him to just turn off his phone. He looked at me like I was crazy...

Man, that's insane! Ever consider a different line of work?

I work in video games... so no fun ever! There is an expectation that a certain amount of time is spent actually playing them. Other stuff isn't a problem. If I am running queries or other code that ties up my machine for other tasks I take a breather with new/pelican or FB. Always have music streaming from spotify or youtube. No issues.

Plus we have an arcade and other diversions around every corner...

It's all project based, or seasonal. There are times when I don't even work and just play all day long. During October-December, it's more like 90hrs a week.

I dream about working only 90 hours a week. :D Some retirement this turned out to be.

Yes. But I also do a lot of work stuff at home, so ....

Sounds like Blizzard.

No personal use on work computer ever.

My work is episodic. Sometimes have nothing to do, sometimes the work is like a tsunami.
I never delay work for personal stuff, but if nothing is going on, I'll fill my time with study and (sometimes) engage in personal stuff.

lendaddy 02-03-2017 07:33 PM

When I was self employed I often took care of personal stuff during the day. Now that I manage a department of a hundred or so I simply don't have any time at all during the day. It's crazy how busy the last few years have been, I've all but forgotten my hobbies.

unclebilly 02-03-2017 07:42 PM

My company phone is on all the time. I take calls 24/7 from all over the world.

Heck, yes I do personal stuff at work about as much as I do work stuff at home. It all works out in the wash.

porsche4life 02-03-2017 08:15 PM

Only on break and lunch from my phone. Something about our computers having access to customer info, they don't like us surfing the web during work. ;)

dad911 02-03-2017 08:30 PM

Does personal stuff include sleeping with the office manager?

Hope it's ok, been married to her since '84

dafischer 02-03-2017 08:41 PM

I've got you beat. I'm sleeping with the boss.

We've been married since '88.

fintstone 02-03-2017 08:46 PM

I do at lunch (if I get one)...but am often too busy...or when I am commuting between meetings...or to work/home. Sometimes, I do make or take a personal call if necessary (but I work lots of extra hours without additional compensation...so I don't feel a bit guilty).

livi 02-04-2017 12:36 AM

Sure. I keep the sign on my door flipped to "Do no disturb" all day. The nurses know the drill by now. Unless its an emergancy check with my younger colleagues first and always knock before entering. Easy peasy. :D

yetibone 02-04-2017 10:59 AM

I could, but I don't often do for myself during biz hours. Maybe txt my wife a couple of times in the morning, take a lunch break at 12:30 or so...

I'm self employed, but consider my customers my bosses, as they give me tasks to do, and pay me to do them.

unclebilly 02-05-2017 05:54 AM

Case in point - I just got off a 6:45AM phone call on Sunday morning and was on the phone much of last night with operations staff on a complicated underbalanced drilling job.

VINMAN 02-05-2017 10:14 AM

If it wasn't for work, I wouldn't have time to post on Pelican.

:p
