Does the driver of that pick up truck owe you a windshield? Or is it just one of those "tough schizle" situations? Thanks.

So both of you were speeding, but you're mad that he got around you and kicked something up into your windshield ?

So, what's your point? That Denis deserved to have his windshield broken because you think that he was speeding? This incident had nothing whatsoever to do with how fast the vehicles were traveling...could've just as easily happened at a much lower speed. And besides, how do you know that 70mph was over the limit on that particular road? Believe it or not, there are places in this country where you'd be well under the limit at that speed.

An actual speed limit sign right here in the USA

"throws a small rock," =

driver threw a rock at you?
he was loaded with rocks and lost part of the load?
his tire kicked a rock up from the roadway?

Just want to add a twist to this because I've seen it happen more than once.

We all agree that road debris that is kicked up and causes damage is not the fault of the vehicle that causes it and the insurance companies agree. However, I have witnessed, several times, situations like this:

On the I-5 and I-405 there are car pool lanes that, in places, are separated from the regular traffic lanes by painted "islands" that are 10-20 feet wide--as wide as two traffic lanes. One of these wide areas is where the carpool lane approaches a flyover. As expected this "dead" area between the painted double lines of the island accumulate lots of debris--not necessarily visible debris, but bits and pieces of dirt, rocks, and gravel. When I've witnessed drivers illegal leave or enter the carpool lane by crossing the islands, there is always a visible cloud of dust/debris kicked up. So my question is, should this happen and your car is damaged by the illegal actions of the driver, is this still considered a "road hazard" or do we now have a liability issue for the vehicle which kicked up the debris?

not even a blip on my radar. i kinda think my windshield is a service part of the car. it will get changed out, plugged, etc multiple times.

i do think it is absolutely insane when a fist size rock that was wedge between the tires on a rock transport truck gets fast pitched on the freeway. then they pay...they need to inspect for stowaways when they leave the quarry.

I was on the bike on Sat., doing about 65 mph when the car in front of me threw up a rock about the size of a golf ball. I knew it was gonna hurt and took evasive action. But it whacked the aux. light on my front caliper. Whacked it real good and knocked it out of adjustment by about 30 degrees. But it still works and the lens wasn't broken.

I don't think all states have the no deductible windshield replacement. AZ does, but I had never heard of it before I moved here.

When a small stone hits your face shield at speed on a bike, it's a real eye-opener.

Makes you wonder about those Harley guys w the open face or no helmet, a pair of shades ain't gonna help much. It's almost like a slow moving bullet.

The way insurance works here, they will do a chip repair on it if it hasn't started to spread/crack.

sammyg2 02-13-2017 01:46 PM

If you can get the licence plate number of the truck and give it to your insurance company, chances are you will get a new windshield for very little co-pay and they'll go after HIS insurance for it.

Last time I got my windshield replaced (2 months ago) they asked me when and where it got broken and if I suspected any other vehicles were involved. I told them I had no idea, just noticed it was cracked one day.

it cost me less than $100 to have them come to my house, would have been almost free if I went to their shop.

Hit it with a heat gun then give it the ice bucket challenge

Or park it in the sun with the windows rolled up

Maybe on a commercial vehicle, but not if a passenger vehicle pickup does it.

YES, actually I do have something to add.....NO-WHERE in NW Ohio is the speed limit 70 MPH on a 2 lane road.

Tobra 02-13-2017 04:18 PM

It is probably 55 on the two lane road he was on too. 65 is the max speed in the state, with a few exceptions that are almost invariably on divided, multi lane highways.

California speed limit info

Baz 02-13-2017 05:40 PM

So just to be clear........

....you guys are saying a poster named Speeder........was speeding?

Had a tiny rock chip in my '92 Jeep XJ right in front of the mirror..parked in the July CA sun all day.
Got into it, slammed the door and ............Snap!. From top to bottom crack.

So where in anything posted by the OP was it stated, suggested, inferred that NW Ohio was the location?

Are you not aware that laws and regs can vary state to state? Sometimes even at the local level?

Full glass was always included at no charge in my policies when I was there anyway.

I had the back glass replaced in my '71 Targa for 'free' after the neighbor kid accidentally broke it. That would have been an expensive fix.

Sorry, I re-read my first post and realized that I did not describe the highway clearly. It was on the I-5 in Oregon, 2 lanes in each direction separated by a wide median. Not a two lane highway. :)

Speed limit was 70, nobody was speeding this time. One of the things that peeved me was that the guy was a left lane squatter and he was impeding the smooth passing of people following the *drive in the right/pass on left* rule, which is actually a law. I adhere strictly to this on the interstate where it's a combination of truck traffic and cars. The semis follow it religiously, so it's really dangerous when others do not. He kicked up the rock when he crossed in front of me to exit.

My feeling is that if his tire kicked it up, tough tuna fish. If he had loose gravel on his truck, different story.

No problem, thanks for clarifying. In my mind, I was thinking about a two lane State Route with only a yellow line separating oncoming traffic.
