Anyone install log siding?

Starting to feel better and looking at building a new home on some property I have. It may never happen, but...... Conventional log homes while they look good don't offer enough R value for the winters here. I still like the look of log so I was thinking of doing log siding over conventional 2X6 construction. Anyone ever do log siding? Problems? Pitfalls?

Our cabin is all logs with the exception of the dormers which are log siding.
No problem with the siding so far (24 years).
No problem heating it but ours is made from northern white cedar from Maine which has a high R value.

I have log siding. It was a huge amount of work to finish before I put it on. Not w some of it needs to be refinished and I am dreading this project this summer.

Did our house about 10 years back. Used Log Siding and Log Cabin Siding - The Woodworkers Shoppe We chose the 3X6 half log. Its tongue and groove top and bpottom but also on the ends like flooring. No need for the piece to stop on a stud. Just put up your first piece and keep clicking them together till the end. Cut and use your cut piece to start your next row. Pretty much zero waste. Highly recommend them

Years ago I was involved in a build of a similar house. 2 x 6 construction. Cedar logs stained before installation. It was a good house and an interesting build. And none of the shrinkage issues that you have with a real log house. Easier to wire, plumb and HVAC also. That's how I would do it today also.

I have got to get out more...I had no idea there was such a thing as long siding.

I did own a cedar sided house many years ago...the upkeep took a lot of the joy out of the cool look of the house.

A lot of it around where I live. I installed my siding myself and didn't do log because:

1) I've seen in warp and shrink, looking like hell.
2) A bright, natural, clear finish often turns very dark in a few years. Also looking like hell.

Done right, you need to refinish every 3 or 4 years. It's not cheap to buy, install or maintain.
