rigth to repair, chip your tractor

https://yro.slashdot.org/story/17/03/22/0535242/why-american-farmers-are-hacking-their-tractors-with-ukrainian-firmware

Wonder how long until this becomes an issue with the computer controlled P-cars....

I know some farmers love John Deere, but it does have competition. If I was a farmer and was told I had to pay a "technician: hundreds of dollars and wait for them to get to the tractor to plug in a USB connection and authorize a part, I would buy another brand. And if I had a piece of equipment already, it would get hacked for the reason in the article. They bought a piece of equipment. They can do what they want to with it. No doubt John Deere is using the Microsoft and Apple version of the customer only gets a license to use it as is. Screw em.

This doesn't surprise me. I've been dealing with John Deere for over 30 years. JD corporate are the biggest bunch of pricks in the wheeled vehicle market. They will sue you over anything. I had to give a deposition over a trade mark infringement case brought by Deere. Some other company was bringing a tractor to market and it was green and yellow and Deere was pitching a fit. Deere sued a friend of mine for putting a photo of a John Deere on a calendar. About five years ago John Deere put on an antique tractor show at one of their facilities in Waterloo and invited us to come and display our magazines. I started to put my magazines out, and some bigshot marketing guy came along and saw that there were RED TRACTORS on the covers of some issues. The HORROR! He told me I couldn't display magazines unless have John Deeres on the cover in their facility. I packed up and left, and I'll never have anything to do with John Deere again. It did cost them a couple of bucks, I was at the point of deciding on which new tractor to buy and it was down to a John Deere and a Kubota. I got the Kubota.

I know a few wheat farmers. They think nothing of spending 1/4 mil on needed equipment. To TELL any farmer they can't do something to their own tractor or combine or whatever is not something most would accept.

Here in the mid-west used tractors are shooting up like longhoods.

You are correct, sir.

My dad's cousin probably spends more on tractors than a small city does on the entire fleet. They (Deere) send factory guys to the large farms. No dealer, they get the stuff straight from the factory. No way in Hell is Deere going to pull that kind of thing on a large farm. Not going to happen.
