Acronymes
"When ABC is anticipated, a comparison of ABC and non‐ABC; CCT and CIT shall be attached in the TM."
i just read the above sentence 3-5 times and i still need an acronym legend or something.....seriously? strangely enough i understand texting shortcuts more. :) |
Probably written by a former military person. They can get silly with acronyms. My dad was an Air Force officer and worked in intelligence a lot. One general decreed it would be best to use acronyms in presentations to make the discussions go faster. Dad worked at PACAF.
From Wikipedia: Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) is a Major Command (MAJCOM) of the United States Air Force and is also the air component command of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM). PACAF is headquartered at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (former Hickam AFB) Dad had a big presentation to a room of generals and Pentagon officials. He had one sentence in the presentation that was so full of acronyms almost everyone in the room was trying to decipher what he had told them. He was following orders to use the acronyms but it was almost overwhelming. |
Acronyms are abbreviations which make words.

I converted from contract to full time recently and am blown away by the alphabet soup. Being the FNG I'm the only one that decent speak company-ese, frustrating.
Oh you need to enter that in DEF. Logon to GHD, click on ABC then enter your HFD. Huh? |
I have a Dresser Rand thesaurus. Over 100 pages.
Dresser got so carried away with TLA's (three letter acronyms) they needed to print and distribute a book to their employees and customers just so they could decipher the gibberish. And it's not just acronyms, they created their own vocabulary. Everyone else calls it a rod journal, DR calls it a crank pin. A con rod bearing? Crank pin box bearing. How companies like that can get so big is beyond me. |
WTF? Acronyms, IMO, need to form words, like RADAR. Else it's an abbreviation.
OTOH, perhaps some people can pronounce the words HFD, ABC, WTF.... |
Ever notice it takes longer to say www than world wide web?
|
^ I just pronounce the phonetics.. wwwuh.... --Acronym! :D
|
Idk
|
There's a point at which the use of acronyms gets FUBAR.

GE loved abbreviations. Usually they were similar/related to the EE abbreviations, but sometimes they strayed.
At GE Gas Turbine division, one of the engineers claim to fame was the "BS" abbreviation for "Black Start". Everything associated with it was XXBS. So, as a field engineer, I was designing/re-designing/implementing a new system for the cranking motor (CR). The old system used a hydraulic torque converter with 4 specific position settings, but could only be adjusted one-way underload. The new system could control both directions (raise and lower torque). It had the position switches for feedback. But the control system for my starting motor (CR) had a current feedback. So, using the "standard", to designate starting motor (CR) current (AMPS) I implement the variable CR-AMPS, sometimes shortens to CRAMPS. That is still in the software 25 years later. admittedly, it's no "Pirate Ninja"... |
I got this meeting maker 20 minutes ago:
BLUF: MEETING TO DETERMINE TTNT AO AND REQREMENTS, LACK OF PARTICIPATION MAY LEAD TO NO TNT ASSETS AVAILABLE FOR NS/FLEX. I love me some government meetings...I am now at DEFCON. |
