-   -   Atlanta - I 85 damaged from fire (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=951483)

I lived in Atlanta back in the 1990s and it really sucked to get around. Thankfully home and work were outside the Perimeter.

The Braves have their first game (exhibition) tonight at the new Suntrust stadium which is in the NE quadrant of the 75N/285W intersection (near where the C is in Cumberland) They have been warning everyone about the traffic congestion in the area expected - and that was BEFORE the 85 incident last night. Only thing I can imagine is everyone is avoiding 75 because of that.

I can only imagine how much worse this will make getting to the northeast side and burbs. My family moved to Atlanta in 1982 (about when Spaghetti Junction was built) when I was a kid, and I left when I finished engineering school in 1998. I am usually there once a year, for Christmas, and every trip reminds me why I never, ever want to live there again. It is the most utterly car-dependent city I've spent time in in the US.

Three arrested in fire.

Arresting the homeless folks that started the fire? Sure, that's a start. But what about the city official(s) who allowed the plastic to be stored like that in the first place?

Those materials are non-combustible. Wonder if that's the loophole?

"FLAMMABLE SOLID.
A solid, other than a blasting agent
or other explosive, whether in elemental or alloy form, that is
capable of causing fire through friction, absorption or mois-
ture, spontaneous chemical change, or heat retained from man-
ufacturing or processing, or which has an ignition temperature
below 212°F (100°C) or which burns so vigorously and persis-
tently when ignited as to create a serious hazard
. A chemical
shall be considered a flammable solid if upon testing using the
method prescribed in CPSC regulations, as set forth in 16 CFR
Section 1500.44, it ignites and burns with a self-sustained
flame at a rate greater than 0.1 inch (2.5 mm) per second along
its major axis.

Kinda like tires, I guess. Not inherently dangerous until you light them on fire...

It was reported the other day they expect repairs to be done mid-June timeframe.

This video gives an indication of the severity...for those local - they'll appreciate the content more :)

That was pretty good.

Didn't recognize the names though. Been 20 years since I lived there.

Supposed to be done at least 2 weeks early they say now!

A930Rocket 05-05-2017 05:17 PM

I'm moving to Atlanta in a week, but fortunately don't have to travel 85. Just 400 north of 285.

That area is highly affected by this at the moment. Everyone has to get off of 400 onto 285.

You'll quickly learn that 400 is commuter HELL. 85 has nothing on the misery that is 400 North.

Welcome to Atlanta!

A930Rocket 05-06-2017 09:17 AM

I'll be in Dunwoody and will take the back roads to Northridge at 400 north to Cumming. Works starts at 7AM, so I hope i miss the traffic.

It's been 23 years since I lived in Atlanta, but we have visited yearly.

Chocaholic 05-06-2017 09:23 AM

No worries. Never any traffic in that part of town.

D'oh!

Sunroof 05-06-2017 02:13 PM

The way this is going and the cash incentive offered to complete early, my prediction is that the repair will be completed and will open to traffic one week before Memorial Day. If this is true then I think the Construction Company deserves a ticker tape parade downtown!!!!! I commute every day with my wife downtown and we have to exit at the connector that funnels ever so slowly into one lane traffic. We go past the construction each day and the DOT was smart enough to erect a lengthy privacy curtain to keep the drivers from "rubber necking" to view the construction. Average backup for us is 45 minutes and we are at this spot by 0615 hrs!!!!! Thats how nuts it is. Taking the inner thoroughfares is a lot tougher and longer.

I think that live webcam has a lot to do with the great productivity on this project. Wish I could get away with putting up a dozen cameras at work.

Sunroof 05-08-2017 07:33 AM

They just dismantled this on I-85. Sadly, you had to have over 400 HP to get through!!!!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1494253908.jpg

Moving along nicely... they've gotten that wall in the foreground poured and uncovered now. Last week, they had the rebar in place, then last time I looked (Friday, I think) it had been poured and was covered with poly.

vash (or anyone), how long does a concrete span like that need to cure before it can support normal and rush hour traffic?
