Fun Math Questions

A bat and ball cost $1.10.
The bat costs one dollar more then the ball.
How much does the ball cost?

If you answer, show the proof and post another fun math question.

bat+ball=1.10
bat = ball+1

(ball+1)+ball = 1.10
ball+ball=.1
ball = .05, so Bat = 1.05

What is the value of 6 × 4 - 12 ÷ 3 - 8 ?

If you took all the Pickles eaten in the country each year, and laid them end to end:

People would think you were crazy.

24 - 4 - 8 = 12

Arrange four 7's and, using no more than two math symbols, make the total be 100.

Should bust out my GMAT book. Some of those math questions were tricky. Well, for me anyway! I'm not an engineer like most of you!

The bat costs $1.05 and the ball costs $0.05:
1.05 + 0.05 = 1.10

This question was in the 31st October issue of the New Scientist magazine on page 38. There were also two other questions printed with it:

If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of it?

5 mins - each machine makes 1/5 widget per minute
100*.2*5=100

A decimal point is not a math symbol apparently.

This problem can be presented with any 4 identical numbers. The same method will result in 100 regardless of the number selected for the problem.

77 / .77 = 100

Sorry, I don't have a good challenge to follow up with. Maybe this: what's a technique for quickly finding the squares of large two-digit numbers (technique transferable to larger numbers, too) in your head.
