OBITUARY: THE SAD PASSING OF COMMON SENSE

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned, but overbearing, regulations were set in place.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teenagers suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they had themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer paracetamol, sun lotion or plaster to a pupil, but could not inform the parents when a pupil became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, but the burglar could sue you for assault because you protected yourself and your own.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realised that he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

When our daughter was young she got motion sick and threw up on the plane. My wife got up to get stuff out of the carry on bag to get our daughter cleaned up. She was told in no uncertain terms to return to her seat and she said OK and they could clean it up. They decided it was OK for her to get up.

But this past Christmas one of the passengers decided to make a phone call before we even got to pattern altitude and I told her to turn the phone off. None of the attendants seemed to care about that.

I hate flying commercial.

**** him and his race card.
I was sympathetic until he started talking about turning it into a winning lottery ticket.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

Sorry, but as a frequent traveler I absolutely despise people that inconvenience an entire aircraft full of people because they decide to go pee or get items from the overhead while the plane is attempting to taxi. No problem, because you can't hold it for 30 minutes the other 200 people on this flight will just wait for you. They aren't allowed to taxi unless you are seated and belted, it's pretty simple. Sorry but this guy was an a-hole and only thinking of himself. This is why you should either use the restroom prior to boarding or before the boarding process is complete.

Some people really can't hold it that long. My mother in law and brother in law can't make it through a movie without at least two trips to the restroom or an hour and a half car trip with out stopping a couple times, even if they drink nothing the whole time. Once the plane taxied and parked again they should have let him pee. Or, he could have just peed in the chunk sack I guess.

I've had a flight land late, had to sprint fully across an airport (I've done this at STL and ATL) to make a connection, get there just as the door is closing, get on the plane, and found out I have to pee in the most uncomfortable way as the adrenaline is wearing off. I'd be pretty mad if I had been told to sit down and wait after that.

onewhippedpuppy 04-27-2017 01:12 PM

If you can't hold it for 30 minutes, you really shouldn't be flying.

Where's the "Like" tab?

Gogar 04-27-2017 01:46 PM

I generally agree with you guys but please consider the possibility that he had a real emergency.

If that's the case, he shoulda just crapped in his seat and then he could have made a bigger stink.

Here all week, thanks!

There are days I only need to pee twice and days I can pee 5 times in 30 minutes.

Just wait. It gets us all eventually, some sooner, sone later.

I had heard the plane was delayed and sitting and waiting to taxi then waiting for take off for two hours.

onewhippedpuppy 04-27-2017 06:36 PM

I've been on plenty of ramp delays, a few weeks ago I spent 5 hours diverted to the ramp in Montgomery due to storms in ATL. I've never been delayed and not had the crew offer to let people get up, use the restroom, use phones, etc. I was told that in this case they had been delayed for some time but were cleared for takeoff when the individual decided how badly he had to go.

Just pee in a cup:
