Many/most folks have a strong desire to "fit in". Some of the folks that already fit in turn to peer pressure to get folks to fit in and or humiliate them. It's the desire to fit in at all costs and peer pressure that creates these sort of situations.

This is a darn shame.

The fraternity environment might be getting a bad rap here. These events don't necessarily happen in the frat house.

I know of two personal situations where no frat house was involved yet one person died from over consumption and another could easily have died had he not been so drunk and relaxed.

The question that needs to be answered is, "are drinking practices on campus better or worse that 20 or 30 years ago. Seems these events/deaths from alcohol are more frequent at least in the news today.

Very sad to see this happening.

Oh, people certainly die from over-consumption on campuses outside of fraternities. No question about that. What makes this case different is that the deceased was ordered to over-consume and then ignored when unconscious and injured. I don't know that that happens outside of a fraternity.

I was in a fraternity at a relatively small school in TN in the '80s. Max number of brothers at any given time was ~50 and I think that makes a difference. We drank a lot of beer and had a lot of fun and most of us graduated with engineering degrees. Like many have said, some of my best friends today are fraternity brothers. Like with a lot of things, many people who denigrate social fraternities don't really know anything about social fraternities.

My life was certainly enriched. In fact, I tell people that I probably learned as much being in the fraternity as I did in school. Leadership, teamwork, working with others, etc.
