impale a golf ball?
OK so one of the matches we shoot is golf balls from 15 to 150 yards. Currently they get duct taped to fine wire and hung but they tend to fly off when a just right hit happens.
Anyway Ive got a plate rack type set up but for it to work I need to impale the golf ball on a piece of 8-32 all-thread Going to add nuts and washers to prevent it from sliding up/down/off After I get the balls on the current rack id like to set up a few spare balls as well So Im thinking either drilling a hole or using something as a spike and heati g it and pushing it through. Ideas? |
drill a hole

Older balls used Surlyn (a thermoplastic ionomer) the newer are urethane (a thermoset)
So, what Tobra said. Besides, even if you had old thermoplastic versions, heat would make a hot mess. |
Yep, drill bit works just fine. Drilled a bunch of them when I made a Ladder Golf game.

After I get holes drilled, should i try to coat the all-thread with gorilla snot or similar, or try to get some into the hole before putting in the all-thread?

Why?
I'm not clear on the goal here. When you say one of the matches we shoot is golf balls from 15 to 150 yards. I'm reading that you are using the balls for target practice; yes? Keep it simple. is my advice. Under size the hole and get a bit of interference fit. Should suffice. (shrug) |

My big issue is time - I'm 46 and the youngest of the regular shooters, so tracking down golf balls that went flying 10 to 50 feet past the target stand is no fun, and slows the matches down too much especially when we have more than a few shooters (we can only close the public range for a 4 hour block starting at 8am on a Sunday) Gonna go drill a few balls and take a pic of my swinger/plate set up for ya :) |
And it is complete.
My golf ball target rack. Tired of chasing them... a 1/2" rod, some eye hooks with a 1/2" hole in them, some 1/2" ID pipe fittings (threaded on all 3 holes), some small washers, nuts, and 8-32 all thread with a golf ball on top. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1498170610.jpg |

Cheap cast net draped behind to catch the balls, eventually it will had to be replaced as it gets shot up.

You know, they make a swinging target for .22 that is the size of a golf ball? Just for future reference.

Why the hatred for golf balls?

Titleist, specifically, uses Surlyn, (DuPont product), on all golf balls with the exception of the ProV line. That cover material is a urethane. But yes I'd drill a tiny hole to insert a screw and dangle it from a piece of fishing line or something. I like the idea of trying to pop a golfball at long yardage. |
I couldn't see it at 150 yds.
