under 10 bucks, works for me

CurtEgerer 11-16-2018 04:27 AM

Wow, I thought $20 was low. Never heard of that stuff. May have to give it a try! :D

Edit: from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. So how bad could it be?

The comments at WhiskeyReviewer are worth at least $10. ancient-age-bourbon-review

great comments on the whiskeyreviewer!

Cracking this one open tomorrow to go along with cured meats I picked up in Munich.

Good stuff. I picked up a bottle at the distillery this summer but haven't tapped into it yet.

So this is a review of that Evan Williams 1783 I posted previously (around $15!). Are you kidding me .... "floral/fruity scents of banana, matted rose petals, field grasses and marzipan" Not just rose petals, but matted rose petals  All I know, is whether I like the taste. Or not. In this case, I do.

Good excuse to buy a bottle of Makers Mark!

Very nice.

Jims5543 11-25-2018 05:23 PM

Man I have not posted my shenanigans in a while. I have slowed my roll a lot.

I recently grabbed a bottle of Proper 12, I have to say Conor McGregor did a nice job and knows his client base. @ $25 a bottle this is a decent Irish Whiskey.

While in the store they were offering samples of Dillons Heavens Door Bourbon and Whiskey, I liked the lower octane Bourbon better.

Found this is the hill country of Texas. I was very impressed. I am looking forward to getting into these, I tried samples at the distillery and out of the 6 I tried these two were my favorites.

On sale at my local grocery lately for $13/bottle PLUS 10c/gal off on gas at whatever stations...

Had a bottle 2 bottles ago (I keep one, if any, at any given time, usually 2-3 per year) and it was very good, esp. considering the rock bottom price.

astrochex 11-27-2018 06:12 PM

I ordered the Heavens Door Tennessee Bourbon. I am excited to try it and to compare to the Basil Hayden.

"Developed in partnership with Bob Dylan". Interesting. There are so many new bourbons out there, it is tough to keep up these days. The golden age of bourbon for sure.

CurtEgerer 11-28-2018 03:06 PM

So in the back of the photo I posted in the previous page is a bottle of Canadian Club. I have not had any in 30 years and I recall it tasting like paint thinner. This bottle was found while we were moving and I think somebody gave it to me as a gift about 10 years ago. Now I find out it's special CC aged 15 years and $60/bottle. Anybody drink this stuff?

A friend bought me a drink of his favorite Scotch last night, it is the least peaty and smoothest Scotch I've had in recent memory.

We had it served with a single small ice cube (a shard really) in it.

Goes well with a good cigar.

I finally received the Heaven's Door bourbon after 3 weeks from ordering. I ordered it through the Heaven's Door site because I like to order from the source. It sends me to ReserveBar, an online vendor I will not use again because their communication about the transaction was poor and they sent far too many irrelevant emails about other products.

Well this past weekend, the wife and I were at an ABC liquor and lo and behold there is the full line of Heaven's Door products at the same price.

OK-944 12-19-2018 04:36 AM

Anyone else noticing that Eagle Rare's flavor is a bit off recently?
Back to Bulleit for me!

wswartzwel 12-19-2018 06:24 AM

I have a couple bottles of the Balvenie... Though not my favorite... the oak is strong...

I was at ABC last week and noticed that as well. I was told that there has been a run on Buffalo Trace the last 6 months and they can't keep it on the shelves. It's one of my go-to bread & butter bourbons and has been around forever. Not sure if it's just this store or what. They only had 3 bottles (well, 2 after I left).

BTW, Publix liquor stores have a much better bourbon selection than ABC. ABC is heavily weighted toward Jim Beam products.

greglepore 12-19-2018 07:49 AM

Same thing here in Va with Eagle Rare-won't stay on the shelves.

Rtrorkt 12-19-2018 07:52 AM

have been a Balvenie guy for quite some time. Was in St Petersburg, FL last week and after talking with very nice bar tender got a pour of Pappy 15 year. Now I understand the draw of single barrel bourbon. And for the patriotic price of $22 for that pour. Might have to find some

Jesset100 12-19-2018 02:24 PM

Had my first taste of 15 year Pappy VanWinkle Saturday. Smooth and warm going down without the harshness of some of the other well known bourbon. But what surprised me the most was the smell of it. Strong vanilla and caramel. I'm told by some Bourbon guys is the 20 year is the best. Hope I find out Christmas eve.

peppy 12-19-2018 03:17 PM

Virginia ABC is getting 9 bottles of Pappy 23yo this year, I have entered their lottery for the chance to buy a bottle. I think it was $270+tax.

My local told me that Buffalo Trace entered allocation this year so store will get a very limited amount. Used to walk in and it was always on the shelf. Bourbon popularity is growing quickly. Saturday I stopped in and bottles (3) were on the shelf for first time since last January. They are at zero again. :p

CurtEgerer 12-20-2018 12:55 PM

That's crazy! I wonder if Buffalo Trace is allocating to game the market, or if the demand has truly outstripped supply.

jrj3rd 12-20-2018 02:21 PM

Would not shock me if they are holding stocks longer so they can supply more of the higher end labels. Brown liquor is the fastest growing segment from what I hear and nobody was putting down large stocks 10+ years ago. Buffalo Trace has lots of different labels. If they hold more back and Blanton's gets easier to pick up I will not complain.

This vid came up on my YouTube feed today. For some reason, this guy cracks me up. He LOVES his bourbon. Damn, that is a big swig of Pappy right out of the bottle :D

I know very little about whiskey and bought these four for my brother for Christmas. Hopefully, the couple of evenings researching bourbon while watching the boob tube lead me to something he will enjoy.

All good picks. I'm sipping some Elijah Craig 'juice' right now.

onewhippedpuppy 01-10-2019 04:01 PM

Elijah Craig small batch is pretty good, I bought one on sale a few bottles ago.;)

I also never have a hard time finding Buffalo Trace, so maybe it’s a regional or store shortage?

Bullett rye, Cheap and good

ZOO 01-11-2019 02:39 AM

I like Bulleit . . . I’ve been drinking it for several years and only noticed the correct spelling (with an ei) on the last bottle I purchased.

I have tasted all the vintages side by side. I felt the 23 was the only one I would fight to get, the rest no where near as smooth.

As far as the other vintages, I could live without them easily.

Buffalo Trace Bourbon is not difficult to get.

The Distillery is called Buffalo Trace where they make a variety of brands with I believe about 3 different Mash Bills. Blantons, Weller, Pappy, EH Taylor, Buffalo Trace, Stag etc all come from the same place..

Buffalo Trace distillery is owned by SAZRAC which is a distilling conglomerate with a number of distillerys and brands. They own the Pop Corn Sutton distillery in TN.

For the white Liker Pop Corn Sutton's is pretty dam skippy.

Ayles 01-11-2019 10:58 AM

Tabs, I recently read they have doubled the retail price on Weller Antique 107 to $50.

911Ghia 01-11-2019 08:39 PM

My 86 year old neighbor brought over a bottle of Crown Royal Black, to my old taste buds I thought it was quite palatable.

It is difficult to get now, at least in Florida. ABC is probably the largest liquor store chain down here and they told me it is allocated and the little bit they get in is gone within a couple of days. Doesn't make much sense to me, but I can't find the stuff down here.

Was at the distillery a couple of years ago. Really old school. Like walking back in time compared to the more modernized and newer distilleries like Maker's Mark, Jim Beam, etc. with formal tours requiring reservations in advance, etc.

Ran out of cheap tequila to get me through this head cold. I was keeping some Wild Turkey back for special occasions, but I figure running out of tequila when you have a cold is a bona-fide emergency, so I've been sipping the turkey. I like it, but I'm no bourbon expert.
I put the stuff on the right in my rear end - actually my truck's rear end if you want to get technical about it.
