Anyone Know Two-Stroke Ignitions
I have a very old AMF moped I'm trying to get running, but I cannot get a spark.
I am guessing either the magnets are too weak in the flywheel or the ignition module has quit. The circuit is shown below, but I think that as long as the ground wire is open (Swich 10 is open) and the flywheel is spinning I should get a spark? I think the yellow and violet wires on the ignition module are strictly for lighting, yes? ![]() I have two very old modules, maybe I need to replace the magnets? The pick-up looks like this: I can't let this thing defeat me....

Got an engine diagram? You mention magnets on the flywheel so I'm assuming you have an ignition coil. Have you verified that the gap is right between the coil and the flywheel? Could be something as simple as a thumb kill switch on the grip. I overlooked that on a 4 stroke 4 wheeler I had. I struggled to get spark and then had a "well duh!" moment.
From looking at a manual I found online, there is a lift lever that appears to be a kill switch possibly? I know yours isn't running at all but might this be why? Problem 10: Engine Continues To Operate When Lift Lever Is In Rear Position A. A wire connection is disconnected from the engine terminal block. B. The wire is disconnecteq from the ground switch. C. The engine surface is covered with debris where the ground switch contacts the engine. For engine related problems refer to McCulloch Engine Owner's Manual. There are no points, it's a fully electronic device as far as I can tell.
I didn't fully describe what I have done... The flywheel and the module are off the bike, to simplify troubleshooting. I am spinning the flywheel in a milling machine (200 rpm), and the module is clamped to a support. All the variables from the bike have been removed. I am able to set the flywheel closer to the module than I could on the bike. I have the ground from the device connected to the table, and the plug is grounded to the same table. I either have a dead module, or dead magnets. I think I need to order a module.

What I am not sure of, is does the stator have to generate AC power for the spark to work?
Or does the magnet alone do the work?
