Newark (EWR) airport to Grand Central Station
I'm flying into Newark airport in August and need to get over to Grand Central Station. From there I'll be taking the Metro North Hudson Line Train up to Garrison (across from West Point) or possibly Peekskill.
I've flown into Newark but have not been to Grand Central Station and I understand there is a bus I can catch leaving EWR to Grand Central. My question is do I buy bus tickets ahead of time? Are they for a given day/time? If that is the case I'm concerned about arriving in on a late flight. Or, is the ticket good for anytime? Or, can I simply purchase the ticket at the counter same day without any issues? Anyone do this routinely? Thanks...

First and most important question, what is your current ETA?
Cause, rush hour, you don't want to be in motorized vehicle. You can train it which honestly is more of a hassle but may be worth it depending on the time of day.

We have done it but not routinely. I get the tickets from the guy at the airport just incase there is a huge line then we take the train to penn and subway or taxi to grand central. The bus is great as its direct to gc but last time in past nov, there was a massive traffic jam and it took forever. Its cheap though

Get an uber to garrison.
You'll thank me. If there's two of you total cost won't be too different. Time will... |

Yeah, that'll suck.
In fact there is no good time, just worse times. Once came back from Aruba. 3.5 hour flight. Left JFK at roughly midnight on a Wed night. Took 3.5 hours to drive 40 miles.

Why not rent a car at Newark and drive?

I just drove in this area two weeks ago...I think renting would be a great idea unless you were planning on staying in Manhattan.
Take 78 to the Garden State Parkway north. Pick your Hudson crossing. There is construction on the Tappan Zee but we drove over on a Saturday and the traffic wasn't bad. If you do rent a car, make sure it has Ez Pass or the equivalent.

I'm meeting my wife up at West Point who will already have a rental - we're returning home together.
I may catch the train to Penn Station and then walk or cab over to GC

With the track/switch repairs at Penn Station, you may want to check to see if a train is available, as a lot of service has been reduced.

You could Uber to Tarrytown and pick up the Hudson line there.
